Originally a Democrat, Mr. Haight .
bitterly opposed slavery, and that led

the convention that nominated Leland Stanford for Governor, in 1867.
In 1865 he returned to Democracy

But he
would not go to the length of approving the establishment
of a negro

As to _ the _ reconstruction
measures, the vindication of Governor Haight was even more complete.
After a. most disastrous experience,
the aréhitects of the. system tore it
down.
With his customary directness,
Mr. Haight did not hesitate to make
known, both by voice and pen, his
change of front concerning these vital questions of public policy. So profound was the impression created by
his arguments that whén the Democratic State Convention met in 1867,
only one hame was seriously mentioned for the head of the ticket. By
acclamation, Henry H: Haight was
nominated for CaliforNia.

deeply into public opinion and breaking down prejudice aroused by the
civil war. For one thing, he introduced an entirely new school of political oratory, eliminating the ornate and turgid, and confining himself to hard logic and a‘clear analysis of recognized facts in a manner
suggesting a rational human being.
It was the writer's large privilege to
listen to one of his principal addreses. The audience was very large,
yet the attention was so close that
it seemed as if nobody moved in his
seat.
The outcome was a veritable tidal
wave. Mr. Haight was elected by
far the largest majority ever given
to a candidate for Governor of California yp to that date. He carried
San Franciseo by more than a two to
one vote.
The new Governor chose as his

His first
great achievement
was an act creating and organizing the University of
California. He appointed the greatest Board of Regents that institution
ever saw—the cream of the real intellectuals of the state, under whose
leadership the young college could
not fail to makea distinguished
mark,
To his good offices entirely we are
indebted for a settlement of the title
to the “Outside Lands” of San Francisco, whereby the city acquired its
priceless possession,
Golden Gate
Park.
He fathered an act for the codification of the State’s Statutes, known
as the California Codes, which has
been extended by later legislative
acts down to the present time.
Up to the date of his administraues to function down to the present
day and has been of inestimable
value to California.
He inaugurated the System of
building a seawall and docks for San
Francisco’s waterfront, using: the
revenues of the part to cover the expense. He made great progress in
this work, which has given the city
one;of the. best equipped harbors: in
the world.
