He. was chairman of the convention that nominated Leland Stanford for Governor, in 1867. But, in fact, both in public addresses and state papers he made himself with the utmost candor. He loathed slavery; he felt the union must preserved. With his customary directness, Mr. Haight did not hesitate to make known, both by voice and pen, his change of front concerning these vital questions of public policy. So profound was the impression created by his arguments that whén the Democratic State Convention met in 1867, only one hame was seriously mentioned for the head of the ticket. By acclamation, Henry H: Haight was nominated for CaliforNia. Mr. Haight did not seek the -honIn faet, it seemed like an empty Governor of or. deeply into public opinion and breaking down prejudice aroused by the civil war. For one thing, he introduced an entirely new school of political oratory, eliminating the ornate and turgid, and confining himself to hard logic and a‘clear analysis of recognized facts in a manner suggesting a rational human being. It was the writer's large privilege to listen to one of his principal addreses. The audience was very large, yet the attention was so close that it seemed as if nobody moved in his seat. The outcome was a veritable tidal wave. Mr. Haight was elected by far the largest majority ever given to a candidate for Governor of California yp to that date. He carried San Franciseo by more than a two to one vote. The new Governor chose as his secretary, a comparatively young man, who was both a doctor of medicine and law. Governor Haight’s administration . was fundamentally eonstructive, and . from it dates much that is of value in our institutions today. As a college graduate, he placed a value-on higher education. large His first great achievement was an act creating and organizing the University of California. He appointed the greatest Board of Regents that institution ever saw—the cream of the real intellectuals of the state, under whose leadership the young college could not fail to makea distinguished mark, To his good offices entirely we are indebted for a settlement of the title to the “Outside Lands” of San Francisco, whereby the city acquired its priceless possession, Golden Gate Park. He fathered an act for the codification of the State’s Statutes, known as the California Codes, which has been extended by later legislative acts down to the present time. Up to the date of his administraues to function down to the present day and has been of inestimable value to California. He inaugurated the System of building a seawall and docks for San Francisco’s waterfront, using: the revenues of the part to cover the expense.
