CONSIDERABLE MINING
ACTIVITY IN PLACER
From the California Mining Journal:
After several surveys at* intervals
during past weeks the writer is more
than surprised to note a decided
increase of activity in the Placer
tions as well as an increase in the
influx of prospectors, miners and
developers.
Paramount Gold Mines
A--reeent strike of rich ore on
the property of the Paramount Goid
Mines in the Ophir district, three
miles out of Auburn, has awakened
Placer county to the fact that it has
a big going mine that bids fair to
again place the county as a leader
in. the Mother Lode.
The company has been quietly
working for the past year with E.
C. Clinker as general manager. They
have been cross cutting for the past
four months to the Centennial ledge
and now have enough ore blocked
out for two year’s milling. During
the past few weeks a large body of
high grade ore has been struck in the
Conrad vein stope. With both veins
to draw from ’the Paramount’s
property will be one of Placer county’s richest producers.
A 60-ton Chilean mill, patented
by the Trent Engineering Co., is now
running full capacity, working on
$35 ore. ;
The Oro Fino mine, which in former years ceased operations with
the death of its owner, Haines Gridley, lies on the same structure close
to the Paramount.
More Gold Coming In
Both banks at Auburn ‘report increased. shipments of the yellow
metal, a $3800 shipment to the mint
being recently consigned through
the Placer county bank. Dr. W. F.
Durfee a month ago began buying
gold and reports a daily increase.
Assistant Postmaster Robinson reports many shipments by mail.

made for the Alabama mine located
near Penryn, operated by» Chas. ’Paltmeter. A good showing by the Alabama will mean the opening of several more mines in that location,
including the Chicago and Alhambra
and he erection of a flotation plant.
The Alabama is owned by M. Williamson of Sacramento.
Colfax Mine
A recent report from the Colfax
property operated by Phelps & Rus.
sell states it is paying $36 per ton

ore is running 2.20 oz. gold and

Kenna Ranch Looks Good
A. C. Most and S. Knowles of
Colorado are highly satisfied with
the showing on the Jim Kenna
ranch five miles out of Auburn on
the Grass Valley highway. They are
now trenching, working on a strip
70. feet wide by -1200-feet long. The
surface indicates serpentine with deposits of free gold. Most also has

NEVADA CITY HIGH SCHOOL
PRINCIPAL MAKES TRIP
H. E. Kjorlie, principal of the
Nevada City high school, attended
a meeting of the Northern California section of the California high
school athletic association last Saturday in Stockton. f
_At. that meeting, Mr, Kijorlie succeeded in gaining re-admittance to
the Sierra Foothill © Basketball
League for the local high school.
For }he past ive years, Nevada
City high school has ont been represented’ in this league, but with a
strong team as a likelihood this
-year, it is a very desirable connection. : Gs
Some Gdpposition was encountered from distant high schools in the
league. Their objection was based
on the fact that it is too far for the
teams to travel when playing at Nevada City, However, that works two
ways, as half the time the Nevada
City teams will have to do the traveling.
Successful in his mission last week
Mr. Kjorlie wlil travel to Auburn
this Saturday for the purpose of
helping to organize the Sierra Foothill Basketball League for 1932.
Other -high -schools in this league
are high schools from Folsom, Placerville, San Juan, Roseville, Lincoln and Grass Valley.
The athletic outlook for the year
at Nevada City high schocl is very
bright. With mote maerial than
ever before, and a man of Coach
Barron’’s ability, winning teams are
apt to be the rule rather than the
exception.
OAKLAND MEN INSPECT
GRAVEL MINES HERE
Making a tour of the gold counMary stopped in Nevada City for
several days while looking over
gravel mines in this section. Using
this city as a base, the men looked
at mines in Downieville, French
Corral and North San Juan.
Father and son, both from Oakland, are leaving Nevada City tomorrow, and will visit Oroville, Redding, Yreka and Klamath river.
Both men ‘were well impressed
with conditions in the Nevada City
district and express the desire to
locate here sometime in the future.
county.
_ Crandall Mine Leased
Pete Iverson has leased the Crandall mine in the Ophir district, about
two miles out of Auburn. He will
start work immediately and will take
over the Lpkens custom mill in case
his development work proves successful. Iverson had the drilling
contract on the Newcastle, Placer
county state highway tunnel.
Opening Canada Hill Property
G. N. Liebenguth and son, H. R.,
are working four men opening the
Rainbow mine on the Miller property at Canada Hill. They drove
a test shaft and hit a heavy supply
of water and are now tunneling for
a drain. Jack Von Sturmer is superintendent.
High Grade at. Valley Forge
Following the taking out of considerable high grade at the Valley
Forge mine in Rock Creek district,
three miles out of Auburn, further
development work is being done. A
heavier hoist is being installed and
a power change is being made, from
gas engine to electricity. The shaft
will be deepened and a five-stamp
mill installed. This is the Locatella
property and is operated by Rihn
& Hobson.
Notes
Alexander Hamilton, mining engineer of 423 20th street, San Francisco, had a party inspecting the
Placer county field recently.
J. E. Dowling, representing the
Jacklin interests of San Francisco,
recently investigated Placer county
properties,
Thousand Prospectors
Jas. D. Stewart of Auburn and
Mr. Matthewson, a civil engineer
of Berkeley, recently spent a day
of inspection on the north bank of
Deep Hollow between Little Yorke
and You Bet, Placer county, and
report seeing at least 1000 prospectors and their families in that
limited area. :
' Auburn Chemical Lime Co.
The Auburn Chemical Lime Co.,
which began operations here in January, own a deposit seven miles out
of Auburn at Rattlesnake, just
across the Eldorado county line.
They operate two kilns, with a capacity of 15 tons daily, and find a
ready market for the many different
lime products being manufacturea.
Chas. Kemfer is the secretary and
general manager with offices in the
State theatre building, Auburn.
The Mountain Quarry at Flint,
. Placer county, is now shipping large
quantities of lime rock used in the
manufacture of sugar.

NEVADA CITY HIGH WINS
~ FOOTBALL GAME AUBURN
ganized football, but their work on
the field was very gratifying to
Coach Barron and to the many supporters of the high s¢hool. The entire squad of 18 players saw action
in the game. Work of some of the
so-called reserves was of such a
_caliber’ that regulars: will have to
step at top speed to hold down their
jobs.
“The defensive work of the two
tackles Schiffner and Casci was especially good. Tucker’s work at
center was commendable, as was the
all around playing of Tamblyn at
right end. : :
Nevada City was penalized six
times for being off-side, which, with
a 15 yard penalty for holding,
makes a total of 45 yards lost thru
penalties. Auburn received one
five yard penalty for being off side.
Nevada City gained 235 yards from
scrimmage against 1140 yards for
Auburn and punted five times for
an average of 39.5 yards against
7 Auburn punts averaging 38.5 yds.
Nevada City completed four forward passes out of six for an average gain of 15 .yards per pass
against.one pass by Auburn which
gained 12 yards.
In Coach Barron’s opinion: the
squad will develop into a good all
around team, as the season. progresses. The players have shown
a fine spirit which, with the display
of determination to Win against odds
that they have shown, will mark
them as an outstanding high schooi
grid team this year.
The student body has given extremely good support to. date and
the faculty is well pleased with the
