SHOP 122 MILL STREET GRASS VALLEY to tackle the job of building their own homes. They usually have to handle the job of building their own) homes, They usually have to have} advice from their carpenter friends, or their material dealer as to pro-, cedure and probably help in framing the structure. and the experienced carpenters and contractors usually are willing .to give them advice. : It is a pleasure to see these homes usually small, $0 up and the ‘‘kick”’ that the owners get out of the task of erecting them. And the finished structure is sunprisingly well built in most cases although now .and then something happens to tie up the job. In these cases the real estate man is usually on the job to help the owners dispose of the property to someone else with as small a loss as possible to the original builder. Regarding alterations and repairs not much can be said. Each. job is an individual. problem. There is no structed home. Why not consult him today about the home you are planning to build or remodel? The modern keyThe evolution of Architecture from, the early pee-historica bodes of the came men and three dwellers up to the \aricd phases of construction and design in vogue today,
makes an intensely absorbing story. { Changes in man’s mode of existence made necessary changes in Home construction, and Architecture gradually took on. new lines of beauty and symmetry. improved modern Home of today is a standing manifestation of his mental and spiritual advance. BG It has is comfort, convenience and over time and space. It is a question but that most of the old , homes of these mountain communities can be much improved with the expenditure of modest sums. The writer’s own home comes to mind and a new porch on the sunny side of the house, new front door, new and modern, bath, and many other improvements limited usually only by finances could well be installed. Among the perennial and regular replacements in a good home the roof is the largest item of expense. Qur roofs here seem to run more .-to weod shingles, cedar and redwood, end to split sugar pine shakes which are a product of our own nearby sugar mine forests. No mistake can be made in using either of these as exmerience has shown that they have no equal for long life and freedom from trouble when properly applied and when one does not expect a 60 year old roof to give the same service as a new one. And there are many roofs in the community that have already well served their owners past the 30 year mark and are still good. Shingles being made at the present time are better’ selected, thicker and better manufactured than were the shingles of thirty years ago.
