“is your name Ace?” and hit him in
the face cutting Jaggers’ lip. Before
he could ‘defend , himself he was!
knocked down and “stomped’’ on by
Armstrong with his feet, according
to Jagger.
After the'fight Jagger went out
on the street looking for the justice
of the peace and while he was looking for him saw his attacker trying
to get into his own car, Jagger struck
him in the face but he managed to
get into the car and get away. Jaggers face is badly cut and bruised.

the winter, in about six weeks. There
are over a hundred men on the job,
who will then scatter into California .

TUBERCULIN TESTS WILL
BE GIVEN IN OCTOBER
Commencing the week of October
17, tuberculin tests.are to be conducted in Nevada City high school. .
These tests are to be administered .
under the sponsorship of the Nevada .
County Tuberculosis Association, an}
affiliate of the California State Tu.
berculosis Association.
Freshmen, sophomores and seniors .
are to be tested. In fact, dasa
wishing the test. Juniors are to be .
eliminated due to a change in the!
schedule last year when tuberculin
tests were not given.
Out of an approximate 525 children’ previously tested, 90 were Xrayed and only one case’ of disease
was discovered,
Miss Elezearian of the California
State Tuberculosis A'ssociation will
come here to assist Dr. Harry March
of Grass Valley, and nurses Mrs.
Hefelfinger and Miss Dallas Smith,
and other local nurses in carrying .
out this campaign.
_ Considering the tuberculin tests .
to be given in our high school, a briet .
resume of the tuberculosis situation .
as it exicts today is of initerest.
The splendid efforts made yearly .
by the Tuberculosis Associations, .
jboth state and local, cannot be ee
estimated. Through the annual sale .
of Christmas Seals marvelous work .
is being carried on in the prevent.
ion and cure of tuberculosis.
This .
Christmas Seal fund is used to em.
ploy hundreds of field nurses who .
keep a vigilant eye on the condition .
of health of the school children in’!
their community. This money is also,
used to X-ray and to give tuberculin
tests to thousands of school children. Also ithe Tuberculosis Assocjation publishes numerous booklets
and pamphlets on the prevention and
cure of tuberculosis.
This constant supervision of the
health of our youth is perhaps the
greatest sole factor in the eradication
of this insidious disease.
For tuberculosis is youth’s most
exacting enemy. It attacks children
and adults alike, but is most fatal
between the ages of 15 and 25.
Tuberculosis is really a very. common disease. So_common in. fact,
that literally thousands of persons
are walking the streets of our citfes and towns infected with this
malady, yet tragically unaware of
what ails them. Either through ignorance or neglect they are unfamiliar with the causes, effects and the
symptoms of tuberculosis. Thus they
carry on in their regular every day
routine of,ten with fatal results. For
unless tthe disease is detected in its
early stages, a good many months,
more often years, must be spent recuperating. It quite often takes from
one to five years for a moderately
advanced case of tuberculosis to become arrested. So one can readily
see how important it is that the dismento and stated that on Wednes. chest wall and the lung and by com‘is injected into the chest; the air al'pands again.

method is that it is not permanent, .
for when the doctor considers the .
lung sufficiently “healed, (usually .
from one to five years) no more air.

Another more serious method is
the ‘cutting of the small nerve at the
side of the troat near the-top of the
chest: This nerve controls the diaphragm, which is instantly paralyzed. If only a small section of the
nerve is removed it grows, back in
time. But in more severe ¢ases the
entire nerve is drawn out. This procedure is used mostly in cases where
the disease is confined to the base
of the lung. .
The most severe method of all is . }}
the surgical removal of portions of .
the ribs over the infected part of .
the lung. The Jung collapsed in this
manner is done so permanently.The . !
extent of the disease determines the . j
number of ribs to be taken out. Some . . .
eases have had the entire twelve ribs
on one side removed, and also a few
ribs on the other side. But in these
cases the infection existed in both .
lungs. However, it has been author.
itatively stated that man can exist on
but one fourth of the lung capacity .
he now uses.
