Broke the Camera.
“I wish to be taken in this attitude!”
The voice was that of the leading tragedian of far famed ‘‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’
combination. He sat upon a cushioned divan
in front of a camera ina photograph gallery,
with. one soiled but richly jeweled hand suvporting his brow, from—beneath which his
eyes gazed with an intensely tragic gleam a‘
the framed motto, ‘‘Terms Cash,” hanging 02
the wall, and his face settled into an expres. sion of lurid: gloom that would. have made
the hair of a cast iron statue stand on end.
the plate, and the ticking of the photographer’s watch, which he held in his hand, was
the only sound that broke the sepulchral silence as the gloom on the face of the eniinent
histrionic artist deepened into a tragic intensity absolutely thrilling in its awful majesty.
“Ready. Now.” In slow, measured tones
the operator spoke. With one hand he
swiftly removed the black velvet cloth that
had covered the instrument, and; the sensitive plate, prepared in the mysterious recesses of the dark room, was exposed. For
one brief, inappreciable interval only was it
thus exposed, and then a terrible crash shook
the building, while amid a storin of flying
fragments of wood, glass and metal could be
seen the outline of a man sitting on a cushioned divan, gazing at the wall with a far
away, majestic. look of unruffled dramatic
grandeur.
The camera had broken.—Chicago Tribune.
Not Without Blemish, However.
“‘Trene, hear me one moment longer.”
The speaker was a young man with a
wildly appealing look and an inchoate mustache.

ensued: ‘‘Well, mister, what’s your name?”
“John Walden.” “Sir!” yelled his interlocutor, horrified at such an unceremonious
answer. ‘John Walden,” innocently ropeated the culprit. ‘Well, sir, I want you
to put a ‘sir’ on it.” “Sir John Walden,”
was the calm rejoinder. The error was such
a natural one, and was perpetrated in so
solemn a manner, that the cadets turned

“No. What.do you want to go beyond

Capturing the Beaus’ Heads.
“One of the funniest ‘fads’ of some of the
girls of today,” remarked a hatter, ‘‘is the
