A Legal Newspaper of General Circulation for Nevada City and Nevada County, as defined by legal statute. Printed and published at Nevada City. Elsie P. Willoughby €-dna A. Martine Thomas Bessler Editor and Publisher Associate Editor Manager . . NEVADA CITY-GRASS VALLEY is called the only ‘BRIGHT SPOT in the United States during this dreadful -depression which has settled upon the world due to econo‘mic conditions. While this district is NOT IN A POSITION to supply "WORK for all the UNEMPLOYED who find their way here, yet there is employment for all our local people who are cable to work. The wage scale is high, and living conditions Gdeal which makes for a HAPPY CONTENTED COM‘MUNITY. AGAIN WE WISH TO STRESS that this district is in no twise in a position to solve the unemployment problem of ‘California and beg that it be not advertised as such, HOW“EVER, we do feel that Nevada City offers much to those “who desire ideal ‘conditions to live in. We have many . mstances of people who have traveled over the state to -find a suitable location and have found here just what they were searching for. HEALTHFUL CLIMATIC CONDI TIONS—P URE WATER SUPPLY—AND_ SCENIC BEAUTY. Furthermore we have here a friendly little city abounding in community spirit and civic pride. While many families date back to pioneer parentage, yet they welcome the stranger and treat him kindly. LODGES and CLUBS flourish here. The Elks with their splendid building and comfortable club room are most genrous in opening their doors for meetings which pertain to civic or patriotic betterment. The Masons have their own building where the Blue Lodge, Royal Arch, Knight Templar and Eastern Star meet. The Odd Fellows have their own building as do the Improved Order of Redmen. The Knights of Pythias meet in their own hall. Numerous other orders hold regular meetings also. The Womens Civic Improvement Club is a very active organization and has made many improvements in the community. NEVADA CITY welcomes among her newcomers, R. J. Martens. Mr. Martens is a sufferer of sinus and _ throat trouble. Finding the bay region intolerable tq his condition he was sent by his physician to Arizona. There his condition remained the same. Remembering that he had relief from his trouble on a visit to , this section he returned here and; secured almost immediate relief from his suffering. He purchased a_ piece of property on Lost Hill. Commerce. The Grass Valley Store of J. C. Penney stood second on the list of The Glendale store taking firt place in the increased sales: percentage. The Glendale store was moved in June to a new location on the busiest;}These figures (including sheet and street and placed in a fine newjserap mica) represent an increase building. lin quantity of 2.7 per cent and a decrease of 29.1 per-cent in value, as compared with 1929. The decline in total value is due partly to the inclusion in 1930 of a larger proportion of scrap mica in total sales than in 1929. Of the total quantity sold, 733 tons (1,465,485 pounds), valued at $177,307, was sheet mica, including 1,253,782 pounds of punch mica, valued at $61,230, and 211,703 pounds o mica larger than punch, valued at $116,077. A very small quantity of uncut domestic splittings was reported by one producer and includjed in the sales of sheet mica. In addition to sales of sheet mica, ‘there were 6,732 tons of scrap mica sold in 1930, valued at $109,100. The sales were. made by eleven states: Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, New Hampshire, New Mexico, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Virginia. No small part of the credit of the increase is due to ‘Manager. Earl Covey, who made every effort to please his customers. He has studied the needs of his buyers as a doctor diagnoses a case. The result is satisfaction on the part of the customer who makes Penney’s his buying cen--. ter. : Mueh has been written and said about chain stores and the lack of community spirit on the part of the store managers. This is certainly not true of Manager Covey. He is deeply interested in every movement for civic improvement. All his employees own their homes in Grass Valley and he wants’ to see the town grow. He gives generously of his time to all worthy causes. Also he is a real Grass Valley booster. The yesults are that he has made friends for Earl Covey and customers for J. C. Penney Company. Within two months he transformed the shack into a comfortable and artistic cottage and the barren ground surrounding it into a park. The transformation was Alladinlike so quickly did it take place. Mr. Martens has been identified with big enterprises in Caterpillar tractors in MINES and quarries have the same marvelous’ efficiency and ability to cut costs as they have in other lines of work. Road builders, County, State, and Government officials, as well as farmers use “CATERPILLAR” equipment when ever they investigate cost, service, etc. Look over any big job where most of the big centers of the world. His restless energy is stirring this littlke community to action. Believing in the community and its future he wants to broadcast it to the world at large. Again let us repeat, we welcome Mr. and Mrs. Martens into our midst. ‘We dislike to say, “I TOLD YOU SO”, but feel that we zeally must. For over a year The Nugget has predicted the ‘boom which has come to Nevada City and urged that the people of Nevada City prepare for its coming. Like the foolish virgin, however, Nevada City was caught without her lamp trimmed and burning. Hundreds of families want to ive in Nevada City, but can find no home to live in. DOCTORS in the Bay communities are recommending this city to their patients who have sinus trouble and there are thousands suffering from that affliction who would be glad to go where they may find relief. This section has been suggested, but their patients cannot find accomodations and must seek relief elsewhere. LAST BUT NOT LEAST when the last link of the “Tahoe-Ukiah highway is completed and the federal highway thru the Mother Lode is a reality the tourist. trade will be ancreased ten fold.
