FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1935."
STOUT ELEVEN
“TRAINS FOR N.C.
HIGH BATTLES
(By BEN SWEENEY)
If Coach B. C. Barron of Nevada
Gity high school knows anything
about the fellows with whom he has
worked in building a football squad,
the team this season should be of a
high calibre. According to Barron,
practically every member of last
year's squad, beside a number of new
men, was in uniform at the first
gridiron practice held last week.
“With twenty eight men out on the
first night, veteran players on the
field, and an increase in weight over
last year, we ma¥ look forward to a
good year,’ the coach stated after
viewing the boys in a workout.
The backfield is stronger’ this
geason than it was last year. Although it is hardly fair to mention
any particular players this season,
tt is only natural to remember certain men who will form the backbone of the 1935-36 eleven. Elliott
looks good at left end. He is tall and
will make a first class pass-snatcher.
Teamed with Steger, the two should
do much toward making the Yellowjacket team a winner this season. .
At rifht guard, /Doolittle is showing .
up well as is. Stevens at quarterback. Younkin, reputed by some to
4e the fastest man on the outfit, has
returned to put in another year with .
the local team. Fabian Joyal, fresh
from a muscle building job in the
north, will bear the heavy end of
tthe puntingu From Sonora _ high
school as a transfer student, comes
Burgan, a half back. He looks good
in this position and is expected to
prove a valuable asset to the team.
More names tight be mentioned,
but the season is in its infancy as
yet, and many a player will blaze
his name in newsprint before many
weeks have passed.
September 28 has been set as the
date of the first game. This enceunter will either be with Oroville
or Biggs, to be definitely set a bit
later. The schedule of dates, yet to
be received by Coach Barron, will
include Auburn, Roseville, Grant
Union, and the traditional two-game

T. E. Stephens, mining engineer in charge of the German Bar
on the Middle Yuba, has entered
his son Carlos Stephens among
‘Hack Applequist’s rookies at Sacramento Junior College. Carlos
made the All-California prep eleven last season at Auburn high.
Mr. Stephens thinks that his sou,
a freshman this year, will get as
much real training and education
on the football team as he will in
the academic courses.
Mr. Stephens himself was one
of the Golden Bears in the class
of 1904 and upheld the blue and
gold against the Cardinals and
other crack teams of that year in
college. Young Stephens won his
All-California prep standing as
running guard, but is going in for
half this year.

STUDENT BODY
CARDS NOW $2
(By BEN SWEENEY)
At a student body meeting held
Tuesday at the high school, twodollar student body cards were definitely accepted by a ‘majority of
the: students. This officially does
away with the one-dollar card which
nad been used in past years at the
high. school.
The new card will admit its bearer to all the athletic games in which
Nevada City high school is entered,
to ‘the three class parties, carry a
twenty five cent admission at the
local theatres, and will insure the
bearer a subscription to the high
school newspaper, the Searchlight.
It will also mean that class dues
will no longer be paid except in the
case of the Senionclass where more
funds are necessary to carry on the
class activities. The apportionment
of the two dollar fee is as follows:
Student body fund—.75; athletics,
.50; class funds, .50; honor society,
.15; band, .10. The. students were
easily shown the saving which this
ecard will mean to them. The cards
will be numbered according to. activities included, and the numbers
punched as the activities take place.
At the same student body meeting .
the idea of issuing a two dollar sea. !
son athletic ticket for the convenience of the public was made official
by student adoption. These tickets
will be available at the high school
next week. There are five home
football games and eight home basketball games scheduled for the coming year. Formerly, citizens interested in the games have paid forty
cents admission to each game. A two
dollar ticket to cover all of these
games should sell itself to anyone
capable of doing elementary mathematics. The forty cent admission
price will remain in effect for those
who choose to pay at each game,
