~ HATE AS AID TO
CORRAL VOTES
By RALPH H. TAYLOR
Hate and class prejudice—ruthcunningly’
fanned into flame—have been the
_ favorite weapons of demagogues and
engendered and lessly
~pogues ever since the first political
opportunist climbed on a soap box.
Agitators and dictators, charlatans
and revolutionaries invariably beat
the tom-toms against class. race, or
religion as a means of whipping
their followers into a frenzy of hatred that will blind them to their own
devious objectives.
In Germany. Hitler has directed
his campaign of hate at Jews and
Catholics.
In Russia, Stalin diverts the people’s attention from their bitter poverty by wholesale firing squad purges.

REVEAL SECRETS
OF SLAVE TRADE
BERKELEY, Sept. 7.—Many of
the long hidden activities of the
South and Central American slave
trade and much_of the lurid history
of the South Seas Company, which
>rought the first. ‘‘gringos’’ into the
recion below the Equator, are contained in a long series of rare photographed documents obtained for
the Bancroft Library of the University of California from the national
archives of Columbia and Venezuela. Using a special camera which
utilized motion picture film, James
™. King, graduate student was enabled to obtain photographs of 16,000 folio pages of these aged documents, some of them dating back
nearly 400 years.
The photographs were returned. to
Berkeley, and the writing translated, revealing many stirring incidents
virtually unknown to history. A ceitain document showing how one individual got into serious trouble in
Columbia for buying slaves from
John Hawkins, the. English pirate,
was uncovered by King. Others
showed how the South Seas Company
was formed to run slaves into the
Southern Hemisphere of the New
World from the coastal regions of
Africa and how it was the only company of. Anglo-Saxon’ extraction
which was ee to do business
there.
The English slave middlemen, after skirting the known ocean lanes
in order to avoid capture, landed the
cargoes in Jamaica and the Barbadoes Islands. The slaves were then
branded on the right breast with the
royal brand of Spain to show thai
the import tax had been paid on
them. The hot iron was again applied by the Asciento, the importing
company, this time on the left shoulder. A slave not bearing these marks
was presumed to be smuggled in, and
1 his owner was heavily punished.
The documents reveal much information on the manner in which the
slave trade was introduced into
North America, to become an outstanding cause of the Civil War.
They likewise reveal the origin of the
present large mulatto populationg
along the coast of Columbia and other Central American countries.
The 35th Division suffered 7,854
casualties and captured 721 prison. ’

MINORITIES ARE
CAUSE OF WAR
LOS ANGELES, UBS, Sept. 7. —
move the cancer of minorities ‘ad
you. will have put a sick Europe back
on the road to peace and prosperity,
according to Dr. Arthur P. McKinlay
professor of Latin on Los Angeles
campus of the University of California,
Dr. McKinlay ‘believes that jthe
Polish minority in Germany should
be sent back to Poland, and that the
German minority in Poland should
be sent back to Germany. An exchange of these two groups could be
accomplished by an _ international
commission.
“~The presence of minority groups
will: cause trouble for several hundred years,’ he says.
He cites the efforts of Kemel Pasha, whom he calls ‘the greatest
statesman developed ‘by the World
War,” in bringing marmony to Turkey. Pasha, points out Dr. McKinlay. sent the Greek minority in TPurkey back to Greece and banished the
Armenians.
Thus the Turks were freed from
minority problems and Pasha was
able to accomplish the most ¢onstructive piece of empire building in
the post-war period. The Germans
and the Poles could minimize their
differences by trading \minorities,
Dr. McKinlay declares.
If. funds. were needed for stich a
program, it could be furnished, atleast in part, by England, France and
the United States.’
