actually 340 miles due west—had to
make a detour that sounds fantastic, /
it had to go all the way south and
east to Vera Cruz, across Mexico to
the Pacific over that ocean to the
Hawaiian Islands, and then,. with
luck, it returned eastward to Vancouver aboard one of the few vessels

until 1884 that a real stampede began. There is still a lot of it up here,

The name Coeur d’Alene was that .
of local Indians who were quite .
peaceful up until 1858, when . they .
finall rose up to strike back at the
invaders of their lands. The upris-.
ing was put down, but it was as late!
as 1873 before the Coeur d’élenes
consented to occupy the reservation
that had been set aside for them. .
Only 627 Indians are left on it to-}
day.
But the Indians aren’t the only
