—The key to tomorrow’s business
may lie in last week’s headlines from
foreign capitals. While the majority
of Americans spent the week’ with
nothing more pressing than to clean
up their work to get away for the

end, all Europe was tense as a new
war scare gripped the continent.

“correct misstatements’ concerning the
height of the world’s tallest tree. A
115-page public document entitled,
Famous Trees, stands as the reply to
private organizations which questioned whether the forest service had,
today answered a challenge to

“Reports have been made of Australian trees 490 and 500 feet toll, .
but the tallest eucalyptus now standing is a.giant gum (eucalyptus regmans) in Victoria, which is 325 feet
tall.” i
“As evidenced in the (booklet,
Famous Trees, the tallest tree now
known is a California redwood,”
Regional Forester S. B. Show answered critics’. The forest service has
gone to great effort to record for the
public the best known trees associated with notable persons, events and
places as well as trees noted for size,
age or freak characteristics.
“T regret that California’s famous
Founders Tree has been subjected to
these controversial comments. For
several years forest officers in Caliever inspectedthe tall trees of the
world.
The Famous Trees pamphlet,
page 72, paragraph, 2, reads. “A
redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) in
the Humboldt State Redwood Park, }
near Dyerville, Humboldt County, is .
said to be ‘the tallest tree now
known.’ It 364 feet high. This
redwood has been dedicated to the
Founders of Save-the-Redwoods . !
League, and-is therefore called the’
Founders Tree.’’ The publication also
mentions another redwood tree on
Bull Creek Flat which is 345 feet
high.

made available to the public on request to the Superintendent of Documents, Washington, D. C., at the
cost price of 15 cents.
HUGE CHARITY
JAMBOREE OPENS
GRASS VALLEY,
The big charity Carnival Grass
Valley Jamboree, which opened last
night, runs for three more nights,
under the sponsorship of the Hague
Thomas Hegarty Post 130, the American Legion, was thronged with
spectators and merry makers. More
than one hundred residents of Grass
Valley participated in the Gaiety
Theatre, with its 12 acts of vaudeville and the 20 shows and concessions that are arranged on the site in
the rear of the Veterans building.
The show grounds are packed with
entertainment and concession booths
are under the personal management
of the local legion post. The show
lot is a glittering midjway and is entirely inclosed within an eight foot
circus sidewall, with a beautiful
modernistic entrance extending 60
to the show lot.
Lavish sets, gorgeous costumes,
costumes, brilliant music, expert
dancing and singing along with clever comedy characterize the Gaiety
Theatre show, one of the high lights
of the midway and is all made up of
local talent with the exception of the
director Jon Zerby and his lovely
dancing partner Jewel.Layton and
Leanna Lux, a former headliner over
the major circuits of the country,
who is giving her talents, while visiting to help the legion show.
Each night a free attraction ‘will
be offered on the rocket ladder, an
impressive apparatus that towers 60
feet above the’ ground, the highest
free swinging ladder in the world,
The Canter-a-Long and the Ferris
wheel run full blast every night. The
oriental show and a nudist colony

This is the biggest entertainment
feature of its kind ever offered to the
people of the vicinity. The public is
