FOREWORD
IND Mother Nature was certainly in one of her extreme m of munificence when she created this
section of the Golden State. Beginning on the floor
of one of her chosen valleys, she first moulded gentle
rising hills and enriched their slopes with virgin gold.
Just beyond, she fashioned the Sierras in wild magnificence, and
in their heights set a dazzling gem—Lake Tahoe. Then she
studded their slopes with smaller jewels with which to catch,
from the mountains’ snow-mantled peaks, their tears of snow.
From the shores of these crystal lakes she Ied streams to embellish
her enriched slopes with flowers, shrubs and trees. To animate
this imposing creation, she gave to it wild life—fish, birds, and
game. Thus was created by the magic touch of nature’s hand,
a balmy land, resplendent with beauty and wealth, to tempt the
cye of man.
Westward came the pioneers. And during that first frantic
search for treasure, they were beckoned here EY fertile fields and
native gold. Here the Argonauts’ found that nature's fields and
mines, in creative partnership with man, would respond in staggering abundance, So they chose from the heart of this favored land
for their homes, a vast domain extending from the crest of the~
Sierras to the floor of the valley. Then, seemingly as though to
disguise and to excuse their generous helping from nature's
treasury lot, they gave to their selection the modest Spanish
name, Nevada County—mceaning covered with snow.
The lovers of nature and scenery will find within the borders of
this political subdivision a variety of opportunities to indulge
their favorite pastime. On an identical day you can see ice
harvested near Truckee and oranges harvested in the western
part of the county. On the same journey you will find combination scenes of nature sublime. Not uncommon are vistas where
the rugged mountains with their snow-capped peaks will grip.
your imagination and compel reverent admiration for their
Creator. Their gigantic proportions resemble giant sentinels on
guard, and stir a fascinating desire to unlock the secrets of their
dizzy height. Then, casting your gaze a thousand feet below,
where Nature in one of her barbaric moods has cut titanic gashes
through the mountains, you hear the distant rumbling of a river
churning its waters white with foam as they dash through the
canyons, Gazing westward, just beyond, you can sce gentle
sloping foothills clothed in blankets of pines, and where the low

hills blend into valleys and dales, the river appears to loiter, in
a lazy, tranquil quietness, on its journey to the sea.
_ If you prefer the wild magnificence of the mountains you will
find a wide selection to choose from around Truckee, Nevada
County's gateway to California. If you enjoy the rugged landscape of mountains softened with broad slopes, fruits and flowers,
We suggest Nevada City or Grass Valley, or one of the surrounding towns for your headquarters. [f you would rather have the
mild, even climate of the low foothills, try one of the little towns
in the western part of the county,
Iv is to be presumed that every easterner—and for that matter
every Californian—has a desire to visit the Tahoe country. By
