AUTO PARK, NEVADA CITY the thirsty lands during harvest time. Just to be in harmony in the matter of lakes as with other attractions of this region, no fewer than twenty-cight are scattered about within a radius of five mil There are large lakes and small lakes, round lakes and oblong lakes; lakes set in gentle mountain dales and lakes set in almost barbaric environment, the mountain walls above the shores rising sheer for a thousand feet. Of the entire twentycight, each one has its individual and particular charm, ‘To attempt a description is futile—they simply exist in all of their natural beauty, inviting the visitor to select his favorite. Within this same five-mile radius are found no less than nine never failing mountain streams, all flowing into one of the Yubuas, and all abounding in trout. It will be literally truc, therefore, that those who delight in trout fishing, may enjoy within this five-mile radius, thirty-cight days’ fishing, and could angle each day in a different lake or stream. It's realized, however, that there are many who do not care to hike, nor hunt, nor fish. Scores who may come here will prefer the delights of rummaging around the country looking for odd incidents with which to enrich history and literature. For these, what a feast is spread in Nevada County! OLYMPIA PARK It’s all summed up in the word, “gold,” for no part of California participated to a greater extent in the mighty treasure hunt starting in “49, than did Nevada County. The region is overflowing with tales of adventure, of love and hate, success and failure, of that period, scores of which have never been written. For those who wish to explore and piece together the early Californian history, particularly as it pertains to the first gold rush, the theme of many an absorbing narrative is hidden here. A brief glance at our ncmenclature—You Bet, Rough and Ready, Red Dog, God's County, Town Talk, Liberty Hill (to mention only a few)—indelibly relates their creation to the imperious miner of ‘49, and gives a hint of the colorful life of the near long ago, Fifty years ago and more Bret Harte caught the inspiration of those unique names, as witness his book, “The Millionaire of Rough and Ready.” A. Delano, a banker transported here from the east on the waves of the first gold rush, turned author and under the nom de plume of “Old Block,” wrote many an absorbing tale. A. A. Sargent, later to be a United States Senator from California, and one of the foremost statesmen of the country, tells of the early days in his book, “Sargent’s History of Nevada County.” It is only necessary to read some of these carly day books to catch the fever of historical research. All about are spots of great historic interest—the place in Grass Valley where the first gold-bearing quartz was found, the birth Bas GRASS VALLEY AUTO PARK place of quartz mining; places where placer mining and hydraulic mining were first inaugurated; places where the long tom, the sluice, and the first quartz mill originated; homes of famous women, such as Emma Nevada, Lottie Crabtree, Lola Montez, and many besides, all of whom have left threads of romance which remain to be woven into stories. But the people of Nevada County have not left all to nature to entertain their visitors, Modern cottages are to be had in most of the towns; at Nevada City is the National Hotel with its genial western hospitality, at Truckee are several good hotels; at Grass Valley is the new concrete Bret Harte Inn, modern in every particular. So with parks; at Grass Valley is Memorial Park, at Nevada City is maintained a modern auto park amid rugged settings, and midway between the two cities Olympia offers many attractions for the visitor. Swimming is a big feature Be Olympia, and there are playgrounds for children. If you desire 4 cottage or a tent a limited number are available.
