IMPRESSIONS OF SQUAW VALLEY ON a
Rainy Sunday..Traveled to Squaw Valley tosee what was going on. Of course
we picked the day of the BIG RAIN Seems
like they ought to have called those
Indians back, and get the water works
turned off..and get those rain-drops
turned into goose pickings again.
NEVER, simply never, have we ever
seen somuchrain..it came down by the
bucketfuls. We went to go to the opening services of the new and beautiful Protestant church, but we simply could not
wade through all the water. We were
boot-top high almost all the way..and
if you happened to stop on what looked
like good solid snow, well! .You had the
biggest surprise of your life , forthe snow
wasn't snow at all, but sort of a white
superimposed stuff over a good sized
lake, and there you stood, knee deep in
water and slush.
All skiing had stopped by the time we
got there..the servicemen who were
packing the skiruns were out of business
-.andas forthe contestants, they were
wandering around, and we know they were
thinking.."What manner of a place is
this for an Olympic Games contest? "
The Inn and Lodge were filled with
spectators, all wringing wet..some
dressed for street, some dressed for snow
..but none for rain..The majority of
the visitors there did not seem the type
that would ski, but merely curiosity
seekers, andarude bunchat that. There
was a good deal of eating and drinking
going on..no wonder, you couldn't do
anything else, and the buses were not
leaving until late.
WE WENT OVER TO the ice arena, and
while there took pictures and watched the
guys and gals practice their competition
patterns..andtosay they were wonderful, is just not saying enough, they were
spectacular..There was. one c Ouple,
dressed alike in matching sweaters and
skirt and slacks..they were perfection.
HOWEVER..BUT..ETC. we did no—
tice that there were a few leaks, and the
wind tore through like a hurricane at
times. Youcan sit on the 'reserved' side
of the arenaand seethe ski run, but only
in that place can you possibly see what
is going on..frankly, we were not impressed.
THERE ARE a lot of people working up
there, andthere is a lot of ‘looking' going on, but NOT on a rainy day! As we
sloshed around, we couldn't help but
wonder what we built the darned thing
for. .BUT---of course, the weather will
be perfect for next winter..
IT WAS AN EXPERIENCE, especially to
hear some of the comments about the American people from two beautiful Scandinavian contestants, especially about the
prices and quality of garments that are
for sale in the ski shops there, in fact
we heard that they were “cheap looking,
priced unreasonably high. and certainly
tne stuff you could buy in their country
was better all around," and we will go
along with that all the way.
It was a nice excursion, but not one
that we would care tomake on a rainy day
again. But we will be going up during
the games and will let you know what we
saw, and did, and thought.
ORCHIDS TO LOUISE ROBERTS.. for
.receiving her life membership in the PTA
-+-you know, Louise will do anything to
help anyone, and she will dothe job when
no one else will..whether it is a time
element, or whether it is a dirty stinking
job that no one else will do..our Louise
is in there pitching for all she is worth..
anti we are sure that everyone will agree
with that.
RE ME MBERANCES IN THERAIN..night
is falling, the sky is cloudy, the streets
are bare, there are no little leaves danCing on the trees..the moon cannot
break through the layer of clouds..the
sun has been hidden from Our Towns..
the feeling of absolute loneliness pre-.
vails..surely, though, we can't be isolated, but there isn't a stirring ofanything..deep silence hangs like a shroud
..there is no sign of life except in the
scattered street lights shining through a
myriad of haze..there is an unearthly
feeling of being separated from the living..floating in an in-between land of
stillness..

We prayed forrain and receivedit in abundance. The
storm of Feb. 7th. and 8th.
was what we called a "gullywasher" back in Colorado,
bringing 11 inches in a 36
hour period. Roads were
out, banks eroded and some
basements flooded. Camptonville School was closed for
two days because of dangerous
road conditions for the school
buses.
