Page 4A CITIZEN-ADVERTISER Wednesday, November 18, 1959 STUDENTS GO VISITING.....:::sssscssssse: Judge Talks to a Young ‘Jury’ Courthouse, Newspaper Plant Seen Judge Verle Gray had just finished explaining, in simplified form, the workings of the.lower court system in in the state of California to a group.of people that had jammed intohis court room at the Nevada County Court House. . "Does anyonehave any questions?” asked the Judge of his guests, "Yes," answered a female voice from the back*of the room, "Are you going to be at the swimming pool again next Summer?" This was a typical question for the Judge that day as his roomful of guests had an average age of eight-years. They were the 38 members of Mrs. Jean Pearson's third grade class at Nevada City Elementary School. They had come to see the Peace Justice Court as part of an educational program that teaches children about the world around them by taking them out into the world, A few dayslater, Mrs. Ruth Paine brought Nevada City Elementary School's other third grade class to The Citizen as part of this same program. Both teachers believe an hourspentin a court room or newspaper office teaches a child more about what goes on inthese places than a week of reading about it would do. But even the teachers, accustomed as they are to the Surprising questions eight-year-olds can ask, could scarcely have predicted what would strike the fancies of their charges during these tours. ‘After the little girl had stumped Gray with the question about the swimming pool, a boy asked, "Do the handcuffs you put on the prisoners hurt?" After the Judge explained to the boy that he had nothing to do with handcuffing prisoners--this task falling to the Sheriff's Office--another boy popped up to ask: "What do you feed the prisoners?” Again the Judge had to refer the questioner to the Sheriff for details, but was able to assure him they did not get the bread-and-water diet of tradition. At The Citizen, the children showed a polite interest in the-various processes involved in getting a newspaper from pieces of typewritten copy and photographs into the completed product ready for distribution. But this interest turned from polite to lively only when they were shown the machine that folds the paper. “Run it some more, " they begged after a member.of The Citizen staffhad run about 20 scrap copies through for them. They repeated this cry after another dozen went througtr the machine and probably would have uttered it still anothertimeif Mrs, Paine hadn't decided it was time to retum to the classroom, ; Tothe traditional Three R's, you can add the modem Three L's--Leaming by Looking and Listening.
