A CROWDED GRAVE YARD %e Wednesday; October 28, 1959 North Bloomfield Lived Hard, Died Young ~The Law That Saved the State Passed Death Sentence on the Town 8 NORTH BLOOMFIELD--A marker on the single street of this near ghost community tells those few people who make the tortuous trip here that in 1880, 1,800 persons called this home. ' Like most gold mining towns of that era, it was a bustling, brawling place: hard as the muscles of the miners who constituted the greater part of its populace. Just out of sight of the town, it's reason for being--the Malakoff Hydraulic Diggins--was working full time at eroding the countryside into a miniature Grand Canyon to uncover the countryside's considerable quantities of gold ore. Then came 1884 and the Sawyer Act ‘which made hydraulic mining of the Malakoff type impractical and the doom of North Bloomfield inevitable. Others Shared Fate Other communities—Lake City tor instance--also passed into oblivion.or near oblivion when the Malakoff ceased operation.
