Nevada County Directory for 1871-72 (650.025.NEV)(1871) (324 pages)
Nevada County Directory for 1871-72 is not as easily mined as gold in rich placers, but like gold in quartz, its yields are worth the deeper and more laborious digging. Unlike most other local directories at the time, it is a name-and-address directory with no frills. It has mainly addresses of business houses and residents. Display ads and very brief sketches of towns and settlements in the county are mainstreamed in ABC order along with the name and address listings for the entire county -- i.e., NOT by town.
Fortunately, the scans featured here can be digitally searched -- though rigorous researchers will want to read the directory to confirm search results, and to spot listings missed by the digital search. Note also that many of its listings have been included in Nevada County Addresses, which is organized by street and number within each town.
Adult male citizens -- The full title of the directory clarifies the scope of its listings.
