VACATION MONTHS: JULY, AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER
Vacation over, the Nevada County Historical Society again resumes its publication
for members, as well as monthly meetings and excursions.
MUSEUM NOTES
The Nevada County Historical Museum closed its doors for the winter on Sunday,
September 26th, It will be re-opened with 2 bigger and better collection the first Sunday
in May, 1949, and will continue through September. Curator W. H, Wayman reports
3,000 visitors this summer, and a museum income of $161.61. Numerous improvements
have been added, including a gun case. Mr. Wayman wishes to thank the public-minded
citizens who aided him in keeping the museum open.
NEVADA HOSE COMPANY NUMBER ONE
In early 1945, the Number One Fire House, now the home of the Nevada County
Historical Museum, was in such bad condition that it was becoming dangerous, and there
was growing agitation to have the ginger-bread front torn down before it fell down.
The Nevada County Women’s Civic Club felt that it should be saved and restored
and set about doing it. Permission from and the blessings of the two Fire Companies
were received and members of each were appointed to work with the Civic Club Committee. The approval of the City Council was also received.
The entire front of the building was repaired, restored and painted, and iron
protectors were installed to keep cars from knocking the pillars out of place again.
The Civic Club gave a public card party at the Elks Hall which was donated to
help the “Cause.” The Firemen and City Council contributed very generously, as well
as interested citizens, some of whom hadn’t lived here in years. The Civic Club paid
the balance of the cost from their treasury. When the work was completed in 1946,
éveryone felt well paid for his efforts and all were pleased with the delightful old
building. In the spring of 1947, the Nevada City Council donated the building to the
exhibit collected by the Nevada County Historical Society.
