Election of First Justice in Rough and Ready, September, 1850
In pursuance of an order of the Court of
Sessions of Yuba County, an election was
held for Justice of the Peace and Constable. William G. Ross was elected Justice
and Stephen S. Ford, Constable. Thi.
court was conducted on an exceedingly
original plan.
Election of First Justice in Grass Valley, November, 1850
When the miners began to rush in, after
the discovery of gold quartz, it became
evident that some form of local government was necessary to regular affairs and
protect the people, and to adjust disputes
as to mining claims. An election was held
in November, 1850, for a Justice of the
Peace and a Constable. James Walsh was
the most popular man in town. He was
the proprietor of one of the first sawmills
in Nevada County. He was elected Justice
without opposition and Luther Humiston,
Constable. The election was held under
the spreading branches of an oak tree that
stood in front of the lot where the Lola
Montez cottage was built afterwards.
Murder of Dr. Lennox, December, 1850
One of the crimes that attracted great
attention in 1850 was the assassination of
Dr. Lennox. He was in his home, surrounded by friends, when a shot was fired
from the street. The wounded man died
an hour later. The murderer made his

During the centennial year of 1850, the
Nevada County Historical Society is compiling a list of names of the men and
women who arrived in Nevada County in
1850. The list is incomplete, but with the
aid of descendants and friends, it is hoped
biographies and photos will be collected.

was located in Marysville, which was entirely too far to convey prisoners. He
would have been swung from a limb of a
tree.
FH. FP. Sweetland, 1850
derived its name, settled there in 1850,
and the town became known as Sweetland’s. The place was noted on the ridge
as a trading post, and gradually became
settled.
