THOMAS H. CASWELL THOMAS HUBBARD CASWELL, was born in Otsego County, New York, on 1825, and received his fatal mandate In the morning hours of November 13, 1900, at his home in San Francisco. At the age of 18 he emigrated to Arkansas, and, after passing the usual incidents of school days, graduated from St. Mary’s College at Bardstown, Kentucky. Attracted by the discovery of gold in California, with thousands of others, he crossed the plains in 1849, arriving in Nevada City in the month of October of that year. In the organization of the courts of Nevada County he was elected County Judge, serving acceptably to the people, and was re-elected for a second term. Our Brother lived forty-nine years a Master Mason, forty-five years a Royal Arch Mason, Forty-four years a Royal and Select Master, forty-five years a Knight Templar, and thirty-three years a Mason of the 33rd degree. He was made a Mason in Lafayette Lodge in Nevada (City), a forerunner of the present Nevada Lodge No. 13 Nevada City, in December 1850. He held several offices and served as the 9th Worshipful Master ofhis Lodge for the years 1869,70, 71 and 72. He able filled many offices in his Royal Arch Chapter and his Commandery also Grand Chapter and Grand Commandery of these fraternities, In the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction of the United States he was elected Grand Prior in 1870 and was chosen Sovereign Grand Commander in 1894.
