An animal laboratory was insisted upon, to be used for surgical teaching, wound healing, conduct of an operating room, assisting, giving anesthetics, studies of surgical materials, preparation of hands, uses of silk for suturing instead of catgut as the routine. F Following this list of changes, President Campbell gave the Doctor a written contract naming him the first full-time Professor of Surgery in the University Hospital, a position he held for eighteen years. This contract was never broken by either party, and their relationship remained cordial throughout the years. Procedures as outlined were developed and accomplished. Putting all the surgery in the hands of the resident staff was hard on younger members of the clinic who were interested in operating. As Dr. Naffziger had given up general surgery on his return from World War I, he felt incompetent in properly supervising the development of a resident staff and it was his old Nevada City friend, Dr. Henry Searls who helped him through this period of adjustment. It became the first program of formal surgical residency training and research development established west of the Mississippi. In 1949, President Sproul set up the separate Department of Neurological Surgery, that Dr. Naffziger wanted for so long, and he was made the chairman. His contributions in the scientific field were many due to his ever fertile and imaginative mind. His studies on trauma, his analyses of spinal injuries, peripheral nerve surgery, the reconstruction of the paralyzed swallowing mechanism and many others commanded his attention and stimulated his writings. This was the Naffziger era. There are surgeons everywhere today who call themselves Naffziger men because they studied under him, and their organization is known as the Howard C. Naffziger Surgical Society. bel + Dr. Howard C. Natfziger’s office on the The furniture was a gift from his fourth floor of the Fitzhugh Building. mother. (Mrs. Howard C. HOWARD CHRISTIAN NAFFZIGER WORLD RENOWNED Dr. Naffziger continued his service to the United States during World War II as a member of the Surgical Committee to the National Research Council. It was for this organization that he visited the British Isles, the Mediterranean Theatre, and the first Penicillin Conference in Tripoli in 1943. To quote the Doctor: ‘‘I took off from LaGuardia Field-at 1:15 A.M. On June 22. We were on a flying boat with pontoons. Not a tremendous crowd aboard, but the place was full. I had a chance to get fairly acquainted with everybody there and among the passengers were Emerson Butterworth, an old friend, Frances Langford, of movie fame, Bob Hope, Luis Alverez from Berkeley, who was working on radar, and Averill Harriman. We had no bunks but there were some canvas stretchers where we could straighten out for awhile and get some rest. At one of the stops the people got Bob Hope togive a show and I was dragged off to a Military Hospital to see some cases of head injury.’’ He reached London on Friday, June 25, at 7:00 P.M., and went to the Hyde Park Hotel, where he was able to phone an old friend, who joined him to sample a bottle of Burbon. the Doctor had brought along with a lemon or two for Old Fashions, and they talked until early morning. Through Ambassador Winant, he soon secured reservations at the Grosvenor House with an office nearby. General Paul Hawley honored the Doctor with a luncheon at Claridge’s with many distinguised guests, among them Lord Moran, president of the Royal College Dr. and Mrs. Howard C, Naffziger on a round the world trip during which the Doctor lectured and made clinical Dr. Howard C. Naffziger during the notes. (Pan American World Airways 1930’s. (Mrs. Howard C. Naffziger Photo.) collection.)
