NEVADA CITY AND ITS BUSINESSES 1874 In order that the hosts of people who have, at one time or another resided at this place, many know how matter and things are with us in this year of our Lord 1874, we had a friend who is familiar with our City and its business compile for us the following: Nevada City on this lst day of February 1874 contains: 3 hotels; 1 hotel and restaurant; 3 restaurants; 2 oyster and chop houses; 10 saloons; 7 groceries; 2 cigar stores; 3 cigar, toy and variety stores; 3 clothing stores; 2 merchant tailers; 3 drygoods stores; 1 dry goods and variety stores; 1 variety and notion stores; 1 book, stationery, music and musical ‘nstruments store; 1 paint, oil, crockery and wall paper store; 1 boot and shoe store; 5 boot and shcemakers shops; 2 hardware stores; 2 drug stores; 5 physicians; 2 jewelry and watchmakers shops; 2 hay and feed stores; 2 wine and licuor stores; 2 wine makers; 1 furniture stores; 2 cabinet makers; 3 bakeries; 4 meat markets; 2 game and vegetable markets; 1 saddle and harness makers shop; 1 silver plating and assay office; 1 lock and gunsmith shop; 3 dentists; 4 barber shops; 1 auctioneer; 2 photograph galleries; 2 upholsters; 1 post office; 3 express offices; 1 bank, 7 daily stage lines; 1 daily newspaper and printing office; 1 job office; 1 paint shop; 3 carpenter shops; 1 undertaker; 2 lumber yards; 3 plaining mills; 1 foundry and machine shop; 1 hydraulic machine shop; 5 blacksmith shops; 3 wheelwrights; 1 stonecutter; 2 tin shops; 2 hydraulic pipe shops; 1 hydraulic hose maker; 1 pottery; -2 pork, ham and bacon packing houses; . ice company; 1 gas company; 19 street lamps; 2 fire companies; 1 City water works with 23 fire hydrants, equal to any in the state; a Masonic Hall; a Odd Fellows Hall, a theatre; 1 skating rink; 1 dancing hall; one Aromatic Club; 3 dancing clubs; 8 music teachers; 1 brass band; 2 string bands; six churches and six Sunday Schools, One School House with seven grades; One colored public school; 2 private schools; four cemeteries; 10 lawyers; 6 notary publics; 2 Justice of the Peace; Court House and jail with county offices and officers; City Hall, caliboose and City Officers. Six chinese wash houses; 2 laundries conducted by Americans; one Aviary, containing hundreds of birds; 1 menagerie; 1 public library, 1 school library; 1 water office (So, Yuba Canal Co.) the ditch having a capacity of 1,400 inches; one creek passing through town; one immense flume going through town, from Manzanita Diggings to the foot of Main Street and emptying into Deer Creek. ALONZO DELANO 1806.s.<. «++. 1874 **OLD BLOCK'’ DIED SEPTEMBER 8, 1974 ALONZO DELANO, Grass Valley’s famous author and banker, died on September 8. It was his wit that had been an inspiration to Mark Twain, In 1874 Nevada City was a prominent Mountain City with much activity as Doris Foley, a local historian and author, has compiled the events of the year in this issue of the Nevada County Historical Bulletin Series. The year also offered some humor and patent medicines as a review of The Grass Valley Morning Union and the Nevada City Transcript reveal. Clinton H. Lee, Editor. Sykes, Postmaster of Grass Valley, published a list of letters held at the Post Office for the week ending Jan 4, 1874, Filler: A woman asserted ‘‘I believe only what I understand’’.
