NORTH SAN JUAN
At the rear of the main buildings
are two portable buildings. There are
two classrooms ‘in one portable; a
combination multipurpose room and
library, one classroom, and a small
room for special classes, in the other.

JAMES S. HENNESSY SCHOOL
In dire need of a new elementary
school, an election was held at the
Columbus School in Grass Valley on
October 4, 1935 by the citizens of the
community. A bond for $75,000 (to

match a Federal Grant of $47,454) was
voted favorably. The building was
started on January 20, 1936 and completed for 10 classes by November 30,
1936.
Mr. Frederick H. Reimers of San
Francisco was the architect, and E.T.
Leiter and Sons of Oakland were the
contractors. The beautiful fireproof
brick building originally had eight classrooms, an art room, domestic science
room, a study hall with adjoining library, an assembly room, with stage and
a music room at the rear of the stage,
a kitchen and women teachers room.
The dedication of the James S,
Hennessy School was held on April
29, 1937, with Grand Officers of the
Native Sons of the Golden West and
local dignitaries, officiating.
An addition of seven rooms and two
lavatories was completed and accepted
by the Board on March 12, 1940. Contract price $43,990. A second addition
comprising three classrooms, teachers
room and one lavatory, was completed
in October 1948, ata cost of $57,211.39,
The name James S. Hennessy School, decided upon by the G. V. School
Board, honors a veteran educator of
Nevada County.
