Long Ravine bridge where the Central Pacific’s Lightning Express stopped for photographer J. M. Jacobs to take this view of the Nevada Co. N.G.R.R. in 1876. Dec. 6: City ordinance prohibiting boys from riding or jumping off the railroad cars or hanging around the depots. The Nevada County Narrow Guage R.R. operated successfully for sixty-six years, carrying freight and passengers. Special trains ran between the two towns for dances, political rallys, picnics andthe Centennial celebrations. On July 25, ‘76, it was stopped by a cow asleep on the tracks and waited until she ambled off at her own ease. Many amusing incidents as well as tragic ones happened during the train’s sixty-six years run, such as that day in 1879 when Chinese woodchoppers accidently felled a tree onto the tracks near the You Bet station, and were vainly attempting to straighten them when the train arrived. Then too, the conductor was sometimes left behind! Once at the Grass Valley station where he had to make his own way to Nevada City, and another time at Chicago Park after a Sunday School picnic. On being missed, the train backed up and found him resignedly sitting on a stump. Stopping on the Greenhorn bridge to be photographed.
