January
A paid local in the Grass Valley Union
reads: “Somebody has left a pair of
boots at the Saloon of Daws and
Gilbert. The owner of them will please
call and take them away.” We should
think it would have been as easy for Bill
Daws to have sent the boots to the
Union office as the notice. By doing so,
he might have saved the editor the
trouble of walking down there
barefooted to get them.
The editor of the Grass Valley Union
weighs 275 pounds.
February
Dr. Hunt was called to the morgue
yesterday morning to ascertain the
cause of death of a man that had been
brought to that place the night before.
On viewing the corps, the Dr.
pronounced it a genuine case of dead
drunk. It proved true, as the fellow was
walking around town yesterday
afternoon.
People will be generally glad to know
that charcoal has been discovered to be
acure for burns. By laying a small piece
of cold charcoal on the burn the pain
subsides immediately. By leaving the
charcoal on for a hour the wound is
healed.
March
Flour is still rising, and the Union says
it does so without the aid of yeast
powders. It is now worth $10 a barrel
and it promised to get still higher.
Four or five of our citizens went out
fishing on Sunday last. They captured
‘86 small brook trout, and killed several
rattlesnakes. They say they had a
glorious time. We did not see any of the
trout.
April
Why is September like the transgression of Adam?
Because it was the beginning of the
Fall.
Why is T like an amphibious animal? It
is found in both earth and water.
Pedro is a popular game in town and
mumps a very popular disease.
May
G.S.S. Getchel, former Marshal of this
city, was riding in a sulk on the Grass
Valley road. His horse stumbled and
fell, capsizing the vehicle. The driver
was thrown with such force that one of
his legs was broken. the old man
righted himself, and not withstanding
his wounded member, he got the horse
up, righted the sulky and drove into
town. He made application to all the
physicians here, but found none that
could repair the damage, and he will be
compelled to send to Philadelphia to
have the wounded member properly
set.
P.S. It was his wooden leg.

write a readable article on it.

November
Dr. B.F. Hardy and the Daily
Transcript agree that nursing bottles
are not best for babies. We are of the
impression also that breast milk is the
best infant grub yet invented, but that
sort of thing must not be talked about
out loud, and should not be hinted atina
refined family newspaper, such as we
publish.
