SOME STATISTICS NEVADA CITY HIGH SCHOOL ENROLLMENT The High School began in 1862 with an enrollment of twelve, ten girls . and two boys. By 1869, when the move was made to the Washington School there were 58, and in 1912 at the time the new high school building opened on Zion Street, there were 125. The school ended in 1952 with an enrollment of 276. PRINCIPALS: Until 1902, the school principay™ served the combined primary, intermediate, grammar, and advanced grammar grades, the first being J. B. McChesney, 1862; E. M. Preston, 1867; Frank Power, 1869; Neil Kennedy, 1880; E. K. Hill, 1885; W. H. Wentworth, 1889; G. H. Stokes, 1892; A. M. Gray, 1894; J. G. O’Neill, 1896; E. H. Barker, 1898 (Barker was the first principal of the regularly organized high school). Those who followed were William W. Fogg, 1907; Frank E. Tuck, 1911; E. T. Lakin, 1922; Frank N. Williams, 1924; Elmo C. Eby, 1925; Arthur F. Isensee, 1928; B. F. Wilson, 1930; Frank C. Coates, 1931; Hilman E. Kjorlie, 1932 and Edward A. Franz, 1946. Hilman Kjorlie had the longest tenure, staying fourteen years, followed by Frank Power and Frank Tuck, who served eleven years each. Built a fire in the study hall. 1929: Montgomery Ward catalog out. Mr. Isensee has a new suit. 6. A special honor was given to Mary Jones (Wallis) for never missing a day since commencing school. September: Humorous initiations abolished and candle ceremony introduced. 1941: A kitten visiting English class is model pupil until Norman Kopp puts his face down next to the trusting puss as his feet and daes a dog barking act.
