Nevada County Historical Society BulletinVolume 32 No. 4 October 1978 HISTORY OF THE NEVADA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY Compiled by Doris Foley Larsen ALVINA CRUMP (STANDING) PRESENTING FATHER’S AUTO. MOBILE TO HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRESIDENT DORIS FOLEY, OCT. 19, 1947. The organization of the Nevada County Historical Society was inspired by Dr. Robert E. Burns, President of the College of the Pacific, at the 1944 annual community dinner of the Grass Valley Business and Professional Women. Interested in the preservation of gold-rush history, he urged the organization of a county historical society. The Grass Valley Lions Club volunteered to sponsor such an organization and after preliminary discussions, a meeting was held at the Bret Harte Inn in January 1945, at which time a constitution and by-laws were adopted. Forty-eight charter members were listed that first year. The officers chosen for 1945 were president, Elmer Stevens, vice president, Reverend Frank Buck, and secretary-treasurer, Betty Eldridge. The object of the society as provided in the constitution was to preserve every source of Nevada County history. Dues for membership were fixed at $1.00 per annum. During the first year a number of dinner meetings were held at which addresses were made by authorities on the early days of California and Nevada County. Without committees the whole structure of the Historical Society would collapse. Monthly programs are designed to entertain the members, but the committee chairmen and their groups form the foundation of the Society by collecting, displaying and preserving the memorabilia of the county. One of these committees to function from the very beginning is the Museum Committee. First headed by Doris Foley, then Elmer Stevens, Isabel Hefelfinger and Hjalmer Berg, a succession of museums has resulted. A policy in the newly-organized Society did not permit the President to head a Standing Committee, so Elmer and Doris shuffled between President and Museum Chairman those first few years until the Historical Museum in Nevada City’s 1861 Firehouse No. 1, was on its way. Isabel Hefelfinger took over the chairmanship in 1952 and for twenty years devoted her time and energy to its development. Each artifact was carefully catalogued. 23.
