June 1855, presumably with enough
money to start a business. However,
the West beckoned again; Hiram and
Horace later started a dry goods, fancy
foods and clothing store in Eureka,
Humboldt County.
Of the many topics, discussed in the
“Dear Charlie’ letters, we will
mention only one. Horace did not
frequent saloons or gambling houses;
the three in the cabin probably did not
have much of a social life. Reading was
Horace’s favorite pass-time. Since
there were no public libraries, the three
had to fend for themselves. Therefore,
Horace was very thankful for letters
from back East and wrote a large
number of letters himself, hoping to
develop a regular correspondence.
Apparently Charlie was the only one to
respond that way.
Local newspapers were small and
the space, allotted to news from the
East was necessarily limited. So
Horace was very thankful for eastern
newspapers and even sent money to his
friend Charlie to subscribe for him to
several newspapers and magazines.
And he acquired a home libarary. He
spent twenty dollars to buy among
others: “one grammar, one arithmetic,
one to work in physiology, one in
prenology, Pictorial Description of the
United States, Mental Philosophy, the
Americal Manual, one Dictionary,
History of Wonderful Inventions, Year
Book of Facts, one book on Chemistry,
How to Become an Actor, History of
Horses, Origin of Government”. The
list is interesting, showing what was
available at the time.
The Nevada County Historical
Society congratulates the Mariposa
County Historical Society for enriching
the California literature with a very
interesting book, which is charmingly
illustrated. ap

Near Condon Park, at Jenkins
Street, between Hocking and French
Streets, one will find a monument,
bearing a bronze tablet with the above
mentioned inscription. It is California
Historical Landmark number 297.
The reader will notice that the text
is cautiously phrased; it does not claim
that the site is the first one where goldbearing quartz was discovered. Indeed,
already more than a year earlier the /
follwing notice appeared in the
newspapers:
Mariposa, Calif., Aug. 15, 1849. The first
gold quartz vein to be found in
28.
