~ Nevada County Historical Society Bulletin Volume 36, No. 4 October 1982 DORIS FOLEY MEMORIAL ISSUE EDITORIAL NOTE This is the first time in the 36 year history of the Bulletin of the Nevada County Historical Society that an issue is dedicated to the memory of a person. But it may safely be stated that nobody deserved this more than Doris Foley Larsen. Nobody ever was as dedicated to the history of Nevada County than she was. Nobody contributed more articles to the Bulletin. Nobody was so eager in scrutinizing the County records, the newspaper files and all other sources to discover long forgotten facts and use this information to add to the knowledge of our County’s history. In the July issue, Madelyn Helling remembered Doris Foley’s contributions to County history; it is not necessary to repeat this here. In this issue, we present Doris’ memoir on the Marsh family of Nevada City. She gave it to me about one year ago and I was keeping it for a rainy day. It does happen that an editor wonders what to publish in the next Bulletin and it was a comfortable thought to know that there was something in the files to take care of such an emergency. And so it happens that we can present Doris’ last article in the Bulletin issue, dedicated to her. In addition, in the “From the Literature” column, a short article by Doris Foley is denoted and Doris’ latest book: The Pioneer (Donner) Monument, The Origin of a Statue reviewed. A story of the Marsh family has appeared in the Bulletin before. It was written by Gladys Porter Sherman and published in the January 1963 issue. Although this article is still worth reading, the new one by Doris Foley has much more information which more than amply justifies its publication. It is however too long for one issue, hence we publish here only Part One; the remainder will come in a future issue. —— Peter W. van der Pas ’ DORIS FOLEY 25
