Notwithstanding the storms and
the snow, the northern foothill region
is looking very attractive. The slopes
are green as emerald (just: as soon as
their evanescent white coat disappears)
and everything indicates that the season is to be one of unusual prosperity.
The great success of the Land and Improvement Association of -Nevada
County in working up a very reliable
boom for that section is most encouraging. _Home-seekers are looking for

“BETTER \ — sLOW.”*
A letter has been received in this
city from a Sacramento wholesale
merchant in which he ‘says: ‘‘You
had better advise the parties who are
talking of boycotting the Sacramento
merchants to go a little slow.” What
does he mean? Is thisa threat that
some dire calamity will befall the people here if they-take any steps to protect themselves against the action of
the Sacramento Board of Trade? Without further comment, this section
awaits the correct interpretation of his
message to “‘goslow.”’ There is one
thing aboutsthe miners, and-that-is
they will not be bulldozed out of their
rights to trade where and with whom
they please.
LOCAL MATTERS:
Aa Untinished Picture.
There hangs in the National Exchange barber shop a partly finished
oil painting of Nevada City. It is
from the easel of ‘‘old Mac,’’an itinerant decorative and scene painter: who
possesses more genius than desire to
attend to business. Mac came here
several ménths ago. Recently he
left, and goodness known where he is
now. He determined to employ his
sober idle moments while around here
in making a picture of this city. He
got along first-rate till he had enough
paint on the canvas to show what he
was driving at. About that time citizens began dropping in to take a look
atit. Each visitor.found something
ds it to complain about. One thought
the perspective was bad. Another
gaid the coloring was too high. Sev_ eral sneered at it because their houses .
didn’t show. Almost everybody who
saw it had some objection to interpose.
Mac stood it first-rate until one party
exclaimed upon beholding it, ‘Oh, ho!
Going to give us Grass Valley in oil,
eh?” The old knight of the brushes
did not deign to reply. He chucked
the picture into a closet, put away his
paints, then went out and got as drunk
ashe knew how. A day or two later
vineyard lands on the sunny slopes of
the hills. These locations which would
hardly be suitable for ordinary culture, have been found the best graperaising lands in the State. The first
prize for native port, awarded to A. B.
to the wine industry in Nevada county.
The Spring is the time of year when
this portion of the State shows in its
most attractive colors, and our Nevada
county friends-should-be-ative in turning a share of the great excursion
wave into that channel.

Did Not Invest.
E: C. Creller and H. J. Bush~ of
Grass Valley went to Oroville last
week to see what encouragement could
be found for investing in land there
with a view to speculation’ The
Union reporter interviewed them upon their return, and that paper says:
They concluded after careful examination that they could find plenty of land
in the lower foothills of Nevada county equally if not better adapted to the
culture of citrus fruit that could be
purchased at prices which would be a
mere bagatelle as compared with Oroville rates, and be a far better investment for persons that desired to go into that kind of culture.
