NCHS Bulletin January 2001 Early team mates at Memorial Park: Albert Keeny (left) and author Robert Hawkins. (Photo by Bedford Lampkin.) Odd Fellows section of the Elm Ridge Cemetery. Shortly after his death, Mrs. Griffith moved back to Canada. The Rovers, Aggies, Hornets, and Rangers ceased playing in 1929, as there was no one to take the place of the Griffiths in our soccer and baseball activities. Some of my early memories of Memorial Park days, besides tennis, are: *the good times at the swimming pool, but for the sad time when my good friend, Gene Prisk, drowned there. e watching Pete Dalex and Lew Elkus hit home runs for the Grass Valley baseball team. * watching soccer games the Grass Valley team played against Sacramento teams. A “cousin Jack” by the name of “Doggie” would follow the action on the sidelines and whenever an opposing player fell, “Doggie” would yell, “suck the blood from his quivering body!” Also “Doggie” would yell, “Up the Valley!” whenever the Grass Valley team scored. ea Grass Valley band would give a concert from the =~ community house porch on Sundays. * you could get a good drink from either of two springs in the park. *a man by the name of Jimmie, who liked to watch the ladies in bathing suits and tennis shorts. Jimmie would become excited and allow his false teeth to hang out over his lip. It was reported that Jimmie was seen in San Francisco at the Fleischacker pool getting an eyeful, with his uppers hanging out. Tom Griffith, the first caretaker at Memorial Park.
