NCHS Bulletin April 2001 That’s the land for me: I’m bound for San Francisco, With my wash bowl on my knee. The wash bowl, above alluded to, is not for facial ablutions, but is the gold digger substitute for the vanning shovel. July 1894, [The above was submitted by Gage McKinney of Sunnyvale, a member of the Nevada County Historical Society who descends from Cornish miners. He is researching Cornish families at the New Almaden Quicksilver Mine, near San Jose, and would like to hear from anyone who may have information on the subject. Contact him at 485 Wilson Avenue, Sunnyvale 94086. Telephone (408) 739-7503. ] Porthtowan is situated on the Atlantic coast between St. Agnes and Portreath. This popular resort town is sheltered from winds by the cliffs on either side. (Photo by John Hinde of Redruth, Cornwall.) Towanroath Shaft, Wheal Coates, Cornwall, about a mile and a half north of Porthtowan, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. This brick engine house has been restored by the National Trust. A 36-inch pumping engine was here in the 1870s, and it was replaced later by a horizontal engine. The mine never produced much tin or copper and was closed in 1889. At low tide the adit and lode can be seen from the beach at the foot of the cliff; houses for winding and stamp mills are located on top of the cliff. (Photo by John Hinde of Redruth, Cornwall.)
