NCHS Bulletin October 2004 take charge of a department in the Central Pacific Railroad. In 1878 California College conferred upon him the degree of D.D., and in July of the same year the Southwest Baptist University in Jackson, Tennessee, conferred the degree of L.L.D. upon him. Osgood left behind a great quantity of his writing, probably due do his serving less time in the pulpit than Brierly did, and to his position with the California Baptist Historical Society. In an address first prepared by a request of the California Baptist Historical Society in 1888, and later read at the Society meeting at Sacramento on April 13, 1889, Osgood more than hints that there were some “serious difficulty” with Brierly. He confesses that “All the misunderstanding was caused by the tale-bearing and malicious misrepresentation of a few men who envied both of us, and determined, if possible, to make us destroy each other. . .” This was apparently brought to light and the problems it caused reversed. On his deathbed Brierly asked to see Osgood. Osgood says that he hastened, but before his horse could be saddled he received another message saying Brierly had died: Brierly’s last request was that Osgood preach his funeral sermon. Osgood traveled the seventy-five miles and “. . . in his study, at his table, on his chair, with his pen, from his ink stand, on his paper, I wrote the sermon and on the 26th of July 1863 preached it.” Later the church would publish it. There is no evidence that Brierly and Osgood knew each other prior to coming to California. Their beginnings were very dissimilar, but their last days were spent in California mining God’s Gold. In this early photo of the Pine Street suspension bridge over Deer Creek, the back end of Nevada City’s second Baptist church can be seen at the top of the picture, left of center. The church building was dedicated in January 1861 and the bridge was completed in the summer of 1862.
