in the old City Hall. The counter was later donated to the
library when the new City Hall was furnished.
County Library System Proposed
The first recommendation for a county library system was
made in November of 1963. The request for a study came as a
result of the urging of rural teachers and interested citizens to
county supervisors.
First FOL Book Sale
The first Annual Friends of the Libraries Book Sale was
held on February 19 and 20, 1965, at Seaman’s Lodge in Pioneer Park. The first goal of the group was to improve the reference book collections of the Grass Valley and Nevada City
Libraries and receipts were used equally at both libraries.
County Library Worth Trying
In July of 1968 a committee was again formed and represented all areas of Nevada County to study the feasibility of
forming a county library system. Phyllis Dalton, Assistant
State Librarian, was present at the meeting held in Truckee. In
September it was learned from a meeting with Virginia
Hughes, state library consultant, that the county could receive
a federal grant of $220,869 for a library if the Nevada County
Board of Supervisors “officially” requested the grant. At the
time Nevada County was only one of four counties out of the
58 California counties that were “unserved,” those counties
not having library service for all residents. The other counties
were Lake, Del Norte and Yuba. The grant would provide fora
two year “demonstration,” paid entirely by federal monies
earmarked by the state. During the two year period federal
funds would provide the main capital outlay for a county system; a bookmobile and 10,000 volume book collection would
become county property at the end of the demonstration, if the
county decided to continue with the plan. In 1972 the County
Library was established.
Resolution 82113
Doris (Nightingale) Foley Larson was honored on May 3,
1972, by the Nevada County Board of Supervisors as County
Historian, a member of the Nevada County Historical Preservation Commission, and honored her for her achievements in —~
Nevada County historical research and documentation and acknowledged their significance to this County and the County’s
heritage.
