OC. Grugan, in Detroit Free Pree. > PECULIAR-ENQLISH, How a Fore: Lady Astonished Her Yankee, Séfyant and a Carpenter. Several instances of the amusing blunders foreigners make in speaking English are given in a recent number of the Providence A lady who had learned English + in a school in -Kurope, where she was accounted wonderfully proficient in our language, came to America to take charge of an establishment. quirements of every-day life, her English proved less comprehensive and accurate than might have been wished, and the evidences that hér vocabulary had been painfully collected. from a dictionary, rather than from living speech, gave a good deal of amusement to those around her, On one occasion she wished to direct a servant to kill a chicken, and, after plucking it, to bring her the feathers. The form which her directions took was: “ Die me Perplexing as the servant must have found this order, his astonishment can hardly have been equal to that of a carpenter, to whom was addressed a still more amusing blunder by this lady. Sne had an interview with him in reference to some alterations she thought of undertaking in her dwelling, but found the estimates he made so. large that she determined not to have the work undertaken. Ina short time, however, she found herself so incommoded by the state of the house, that she decided it would be necessary to have the alterations made, even at the figure named by the carpenter, She accordingly sent for him, and once more carefully oxplained to him what she wished to have done, To her surprise the man promptly named a price for the work;which.was considerably in advance of the ‘previous estimate, and his feelings may be imagined when, in her consternation, her peculiar English betrayed her into saying: “Why, sir, you are dearer to me than when we’were first engaged.” If the carpenter appreciated a joke,he should have _. scaled down his figures, P WHY THEY RACE SLOW. 4 Dakota Conductor Gives Some New. Points on Railroad Financicring, A man was one day making a trip ona “mixed train” on a Dakota road, says /eras Siftings. Passage on these trains is never taken except for journeys of considerable length; walking is as easy and much faster for short distances, On this occasion the movement was even more deliberate than usual, and the passenger called the conductor.to his seat and said: “Tsn’t this motion pretty slow?” “ Well, we ain’t flying, I'l] admit,” “Bure every ting . is all right?” “T think so.’ = “ Wheels all ” . ** Yes, I greased them myself.” “Tires all ont’ “Yes. We run through the creek back here and soaked up the wheels 80 that they would stay.” “ Any spokes loose” No. ”» “ You are certain the wheels are all on the rails?’ “ They was when I come in."" “Couldn't be possible that any of them are off and the axle dragging, could it?’ “T guess not.” * Are we going up-hill!”’ No, this is pretty middlin’ level. hd “Do you always run at this gait?” EO ROP AY ARERT ae AEN NY 4TO ADVERTISERS , y 4 ae Advertising Medium in Northern nip sesoute =J0B=PRINTING != The TRANSCRIP has he 7 Largest and Best Equipped Job Print-‘ ing Office In the State North of Sacramento, and its prices for FIRST-CLASS work ara as hk ww anywhere on the Coast, The establish nen has lately been stocked with a full lire « the Most Modern and Attractive Types anc other peoung material, plain and orna menta THE Frue Concentrator Offers $1,000 Challenge to any Machine.
