NCHS Bulletin July 2021
Marshal. No party nominations are made for
local officers in this place, the candidates
offering themselves by public announcement.
There will be no opposition to the present
Trustees and Assessor, the only contesting
office is that of city Marshal. The present
incumbent having declined a re-election on
the 16th Dennis D. Carter announced himself
a candidate for that office. The Democrats
declined running a candidate but determined
to support Mr. Carter. On 17th a Republican
named Meacham announced himself as a
candidate for this office, and the contest will
be between two Republicans, with the prestige
in favor of Carter. We will now see whether
the Republicans of Nevada City are in favor of
equal rights and equal privileges to the nearly
enfranchised citizens.
To-day, escorted by Mr. John Crawford, I
visited several colored
families, and made a
number of new acquaintances. I called
on Messrs. Ford,
French, Dorsey, Jas.
Booth, G. A. Cantine, Mrs. Fields, Mrs.
Davis, and others. At
dinner I was the guest
of J. H. Hamilton. Mr.
Crawford pointed out
to me several interesting localities, naming
some of the principal
mines. To-morrow Mr.
Carter will take me
through some of the
mines.

WATERPROOF SUIT.
Patented Feb. 28, 1893.
Bell may have worn a waterproof suit similar to this from an
running into it; but the walk I took with Mr.
Crawford on Monday (April 21) convinced me
that I was mistaken. The upper part of Nevada
City is handsomely laid out with neat villas,
and some of the buildings are really beautiful.
The main street is quite level, and several colored families are residing thereon, and are not
only residents, but owners of property.
The Mines
Tuesday morning Mrs. Carter took me to the
Washington Mine, adjacent to their house,
and a portion of the tunnel running under their
land. She introduced me to the foreman, who
received me very courteously, and explained
the workings of the machinery. This is a quartz
mine, the tunnel is seven hundred feet deep,
and extending several hundred feet in different
directions. I had a strong desire to go down the
flume, but the foreman advised me not to go, and Mrs.
Carter positively prohibited
me from going down, saying
she would not be responsible
for my early decease if . attempted the perilous venture;
so I refrained.
The next mine I visited was
the Nevada Mine, about a
mile distant. As the road led
over rocks and crags and
through “lava beds,” mine
hostess declined going, which
pleased me much, as she was
continually cautioning me to
be careful, as if I was not old
enough to take care of myself.
The Nevada is also a quartz
mine, with a ten-stamp mill,
worked by hydraulic power.
The tunnel is about a thousand
_ feet deep, and extends seven, teen hundred feet in the earth.
