NCHS Bulletin April 2022 His artistic mural and painting style was certainly very influential not only in Mexico and California, but also around the world. “In fact, it was Mexico’s government-sponsored program, brought to attention in the United States..that would serve as the impetus for incoming president Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s WPA Federal Art Program.’ During Rivera’s lifetime (1886-1957), his murals and paintings appeared all over the world. He had a deep historical interest in indigenous people, both in Mexico and in North America, and often included them as models in his works. As early as 1931, his art was shown in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2018 his painting “The Rivals” sold in the United States for $9.76 million. The Getty Trust hopes that the “Miners Sketchbook,” an understudied gem, will yield further interesting data and a clearer picture of Rivera’s considerable influence on the art world in the 1930’s and following. Today both his and Kahlo’s pictures hang in most of the world’s great museums. Endnotes Rivera, Diego, Portrait of America. New York and London: George Allen and Unwin, 1934, 14. 2.
