The Seagraves Truck, Searls Historical Library. that, one of these days. More the boys looked at that picture the itchier they got.... Ralph Gaylord ...was prevailed upon to write the Seagrave Fire Company and see what could be done about the purchase of one... Ralph soon had a working plan... The Seagrave agent came to our City and approved the plans; a down payment was agreed upon together with yearly payments and [in 1913] we were the proud possessor of an up to the minute Red Motor driven Seagrave Truck. .... Much work and changes had to be made in the No. 2 Fire House to change over from horses to motor equipment. This work was soon accomplished and it was a big day for everybody in Nevada City; needless to say this was RED LETTER DAY FOR Firemen of Nevada City, when this big red Seagrave Fire truck drove up Broad Street and permanently parked in No. 2 fire House. ... Gaylord ...procured a Nevada County Bank Loan for the down payment and the department members signified their willingness relative future payments. Ralph started out with a couple of blank sheets of paper seeking endorsements and soon had one 100 per cent sign up of members of the Nevada City Fire Department to pay the balance of payments as they fell due. Several months had passed after the Boys had placed their “JOHN HENRY” on the Truck Bank Loan Note with the Nevada County Bank, the question arose relative the large debt, responsibility etc each member held. Mr G. J. Rector attended the meeting and personally gave the Boys the LOW DOWN; very much to the surprise of many when he stated each and every name appearing on the note could be held individually responsible for the entire debt plus interest and not collectively. Boy o Boy you should have seen the expression of the faces of many members change to a fiery red and I would not be surprised if icicles did not run up and down their spines. They realized that they had signed their entire holdings including wife, kids, even their cows and chickens away....
