News from Firehouse No.1 Museum
Submitted by Cathy Wilcox-Barnes
s Iam writing this, the Firehouse No. 1 Museum has just
nished opening our doors for
the Summer/Fall 2023 season. This
marks 76 years of the Nevada County
Historical Society members and the
public supporting this wonderful Museum in the iconic Nevada Hose Company
Firehouse No. . station. In many ways, it is much the
same as I remember it as a small child when my sisters
and I would walk down from Nevada City Elementary
School and stop in to enjoy the Museum and visit the
docents. In just as many ways, it has changed and grown
———— —— throughout the years.
You no longer step
through the small
door to enter — now
you go through the
wide opening door,
= just as the hose carts
once did. You no longer get to play with
the stereoscope viewer like we once did, but you can still
see it on display. The mammoth tooth still resides in the
lower display case for young and old to discover and delight over. If you haven’t been in to see us for a while, or
if you have never dropped by for a visit, please make sure
to add it to your list of favorite summer activities. We are
always changing while somehow we manage to retain the
same feeling and character that those who came before us
created 76 years ago. We owe a debt of gratitude to those
forefathers and foremothers.
Some new updates or enhancements to the museum
include a new keypad for our alarm system (they no
longer had parts to fix our old one) and a new camera
system which will greatly facilitate monitoring activities
in the Museum. We have some additions to our displays
and several other items that will be added as we find time
and space. We are working on new signage to show the
translation of some of the major inscriptions in the Chinese Altar area. We are also working on some educational
programs and events to not only raise awareness of our
awesome Museum but to help locals and visitors better
appreciate our unique and challenging past. Our special
school tours are winding down for this school year, but
we always encourage young people to visit us with their
parents and grandparents, even if they are out of school.
From baskets to bottles to birdcages and everything in
between, we have something for everyone.
If you want to learn more about our history and have
a few extra hours a week, we are always looking for
docents. No special expertise or experience is necessary.
Whether you have lived here for decades or just arrived
last week, our Museum is
the perfect place to expand
your knowledge of the area.
We have resources available
to docents who want to learn
about a particular subject or
activity in our county. In between visitors we encourage
you to read through them.
It’s also a lot of fun interacting with the public and finding out what brought them into the Museum and whether
they are local or from some other area. Another selling
point on becoming a docent at the Firehouse No. 1 Museum is that our building stays cool inside, even on those
dreadfully hot summer days! If you are interested in becoming a docent, please contact Cathy Wilcox-Barnes at
(530) 265-2155 or [email protected] to find out more
about how you can become involved. Have a wonderful
summer and hope to see you at the Museum!
