News from Searls Historical Library
Submitted by Pat Chesnut
reparations for the expansion project for the Searls
Library are beginning to get moving. The Architect
and engineers designing the plans for the remodel
are nearing completion of their work. The next steps are to
submit the plans to the Nevada County Building Department for their approval and then have contractors bid the
project.
In the meantime, James Ketcham has been preparing
for the work. He has been making room in the storage
facility for the placement of the filing cabinets, bookcases
and other furniture that will be installed in the finished
archive storage room. This has been a major project in
itself which has instigated a re-design of the displays in the
lobby of the History Center. Each of the three museums
operated by the Society has been asked to revise and/or
upgrade their displays to show the public just what they
have in the Firehouse #1 Museum, The Narrow Gauge and
Transportation Museum and the North Star Power House
Mining Museum. James has also inventoried the books the
Society has for sale and has upgraded the display of them
in the lobby. Come by and see what he and the museum
staffs have done.
While all this preparation is on-going, the Searls staff
continues their work to make the collection more accessible to the public. The typewritten card catalog items for
businesses are being transferred to the digital card catalog
as well as the indexing of a collection of original incorporation documents for businesses that operated within
Nevada County. Of course the indexing of the McGuire
Map Collection continues and a new map collection of approximately 700 surveyor’s maps from the 1940-1960s era
are being worked on. This collection is of digitized maps
and is stored on one computer flash-drive. The indexing of
the Pine Grove Cemetery book and the Pinkerton Detective reports continues and should be completed in the near
future.
Additions to the collection continue to come in almost
daily. One recent addition is of some boxes containing
items about the Ott family, the famous assayers of Nevada
City. Another recent donation is from the library of the
University of the Pacific. That collection includes hundreds
of governmental brochures about mining and a number of
other books on the same subject. This collection will be
sorted and those items of interest about the Nevada County mining industry will be added to the collection and the
remaining items added to the “for sale” collection.
Feel free to come see what is happening at the Searls.
There is always something new.
