PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Greetings Society Members,
. : accordance with my time-honored tradition in the final News/etter
Quarterly Newsletter
edition of the year, I like to acknowledge the stupendous efforts of
the numerous volunteers that keep the Society operating so efficiently and effectively in carrying out our mission to preserve Nevada
County History. In many ways we are an operational anomaly in the
non-profit world, in that we have ZERO paid employees and all we
do is carried out via dedicated volunteers. Most non-profits today bear
the financial burden of a paid executive director and other paid staff to
carry out their given mission..but not your Historical Society!
This past October Ist, we continued our custom of hosting a
barbecue for our volunteers. Held at Condon Park, the weather was
a bit cool that afternoon, but spirits were high, and the barbecue
was hot, cooking hamburgers and sausages. Our Board of Directors
supplied salads and side dishes, and cake, home-made ice cream and
cookies that topped off a delicious meal for all. But the highlight of
the gathering was to recognize and bestow selected awards to several
of our notable and exemplary volunteers. Board Member and Society
“chief” Treasurer David Bard was nominated and received the Distinguished Service Award, recognizing his many years as dutifully serving as the Society Chief Financial Officer and astutely guiding us on a
financially successful course. Lesser known, David wears many other
volunteer hats, including the consummate proofreader for this very
publication, as well as our Bulletin publication. Next, member Chuck
Scimeca’s passion for Nevada County history earned him the Distinguished Service award in recognition of his service on the Nevada
