PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Greetings Society Members,
In my last Newsletter message, I shared the exciting news about our
plans to create a new museum that would honor and recognize the
history of our local logging industry. Since our initial organizational
meeting back in February, our study groups have been focusing on the
creation of a name, mission statement, and on locating a piece of real
estate that will readily accommodate this notable museum.
On each of these endeavors, I am pleased to report that we have made
significant progress. At our May Board of Directors meeting, the name
Gold Country Forestry & Timber Discovery Museum was approved.
Also approved was the following mission statement: “Country Gold
Forestry & Timber Discovery Museum extends the Nevada Historical Society’s goal of celebrating and preserving the history of Nevada
County, by providing a regional learning center that recognizes the
local historical impact of logging for use in mining, how logging and
timber supported the growth of our community and our nation, and
how contemporary timberland management now provides a renewable
resource for future generations.”
Where the museum will be located, and how it will be funded, are
much more difficult tasks. However, I’m pleased to report that we
currently have our sights on a very prominently located piece of real
