contain about $200 worth of gold. This is said to be an exceedingly rich lead throughout, but no
machinery has yet been put in operation.
One Tuesday evening, we witnessed one of the most beautiful phenomena of Nature. Though the
sky was clear and a full moon, for some two hours we were wrapped in almost total darkness, and “the
moon was turned to blood.” According to the laws of Nature, it is impossible for the moon in an eclipse to
remain for a much longer time in total obscurity. We first witnessed it about nine o’clock and a little
before eleven a small portion of it was revealed with its natural brightness.
HAWORTH & SWIFT?’S line of stages is the only one that has continued to run through the stormy
weather. A stage of this line now arrives regularly every evening. The enterprise of the proprietors is
worthy of public encouragement.
PERSONAL.—We are glad to welcome the return to our city of our friend and fellow citizen Dr.
[John] Lark, who has been on a visit to his friends in the Atlantic States. He returns to make California his
permanent home.
Whig Convention.
At an adjourned meeting of the Whigs of Nevada county, held the Sth inst., Judge Stanton Buckner
was called to the Chair and [John] I. Sykes appointed Secretary. . . The following persons were selected
as [the County Central] Committee: John Anderson, I. T. Hirst, and J. I. Sykes. In addition to these
gentlemen, by virtue of their office members of the approaching State Convention, the following
delegates were selected.. : C. F. Smith, of Grass Valley; D. L. Harris, of Rough and Ready; Semple M.
Journey of Cayoteville. A. A. Sargent then offered several resolutions, which were adopted as the sense of
the meeting [in support of Millard Fillmore for President].
[I. T. Hirst already had returned to Ohio in November 1851, and he never came back to California. .
The second Quarterly Meeting for the [Methodist Episcopal] Church in Nevada, commences the
10th inst. (Saturday) at 11 o’clock. Rev. I. Owen, P.E. will attend.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 1852
The delegates appointed to the Democratic County Convention met pursuant to call of the
Democratic Central Committee at the court house, Nevada city, January 8th, 1852. The
Convention was organized by appointing Hon. Moses F. Hoit Chairman, and T. H. Rolfe
Secretary. .. On motion of Wm. H. Endicott.. each precinct represented [was] entitled to
four votes. On motion of E. W. Roberts . . . a committee of five [E. W. Roberts; Jas. S. Mann;
W. S. Patterson, T. J. Andrews, and J. R. McConnell was appointed to] drafted resolutions [one
of which was:] That, as a portion of the mining community of California, we simply request of
the State Legislature and of Congress, that they “let us alone.” ..
The following gentlemen were elected delegates [to the state convention]: Messrs. James
Walsh, Wm. H. Lyons, E. W. Roberts, J. R. McConnell, W. S. Patterson, Amos T. Laird, T. J.
Andrews, Wm. Bothwell, Wm. J. Knox, Wm. M. Beard, Isaac Heath, W. H. Endicott, Jas. S.
Mann, John Wadsworth. .. MOSES F. HoIT, Chairman. T. H. ROLFE, Secretary.
