NEVADA JOURNAL JANUARY 6, 1854 3
POSTPONED.—We learn that Craycroft & Co’s raffle is postponed till Jan. 10th, because all the
tickets were not sent in. It positively comes off at that date.
By an order of the County Court passed on yesterday, Nevada is to be incorporated under the act
regulating the incorporation of towns. This is what we have long been wanting, and if the right kind of
officers are chosen, will be the greatest guaranty for good society, we could have.
NEW YEARS DAY was celebrated in this city with considerable zest. Many families kept open
house, and even some forlorn bachelors opened heart and house on that day, to lessen for the time being
their miseries. We regret to say some of the young men got unreasonably tight, in glorification of the
occasion. A convivial party assembled in the evening at the Bourbon Lodge, to discuss an admirable
supper of turkey, pig, duck, quail, etc. Speeches were made, and toasts drank in floods of genuine
Heidsick, when most of the party adjourned to a party ball at Grass Valley.
The Dancing School of Mr. Robinson is held next on Tuesday evening, at Abbott’s hall. At nine
o’clock each evening it is resolved into a cotillion party. Last Tuesday evening many ladies were in
attendance, and the company passed several hours “on the light fantastic toe.”
MARRIED. At the residence of W. W. Couzens in Sacramento on the 27th ult. by Rev. B. T. Crouch
Jr., Mr. J. H. BOSTWICK, M. L. elect from Nevada county and Miss SARAH P. STAMPER, late of
Quincy, Illinois, niece of Judge Ralston of Sacramento.
Examination.—The School Commissioners will hold a meeting this evening, at the Journal office,
for the purpose of examining such persons as may present themselves as candidates for school teachers.
STOLEN.—Some consummate rascal stole from our office on Thursday a handsome picture,
representing the Landing of the Pilgrims. The picture was the work of a lady artist of Nevada. It was
taken from the frame while the hands were absent at noon. We will give $25 reward for the finding of the
picture, and $50 for the picture and thief.
The County officers have removed to rooms in [Hamlet] Davis’ new brick on Broad street, where
they have admirable accommodations.
NOTICE.—In another column it will be seen that A. A. Sargent has disposed of his interest in the
Journal to Messrs. Budd & Skelton. He recommends them to the kindly regard and support of his friends
and the public. No change in the editorial conduct of this paper will be made at present.
We are informed by the County clerk that an order has been issued by the Court of Sessions
including in the new township of Washington, for the convenience of the people of the vicinity, that
portion of Eureka township within a line extending from Virgin Flat running along the ridge to the forks
of Poor Man’s creek above Shann’s store, thence in an easterly direction to the line of said township
heretofore established. The order will appear in next week’s paper, when the exact boundaries shall have
been furnished by the Surveyor.
