2 JANUARY 4, 1856 NEVADA JOURNAL THE RAVEL’S.—This celebrated troupe will appear before the people of Nevada City for the first time, on Monday evening next, in the new Theatre. It is the largest and best organized company in the States, consisting of twenty-three persons, ladies and gentlemen. They have been performing below with great success. We predict for them an excellent run in Nevada. A HINT.—The experiment of graveling the streets of Sacramento has been tried on a small scale, the [Sacramento] Union says, with success. There is an abundance of excellent gravel in the vicinity of Nevada. Broad street and Main street need improvement badly. Would it not be well to try it here? SWORD PRESENTATION.—A sword was presented by the friends of Mr. Warwick to that gentleman on Wednesday evening in the theatre. A neat address was made by Col. Taylor, of Downieville, on the presentation, which was happily responded to by Mr. Warwick. HOTEL CHANGE.—[David] W. Aldrich, the popular landlord of Metropolis Hotel, retired on the lst instant, to give place to Mrs. Brooks of Sacramento. The Hotel will lose nothing by the change. A party was given on New Years’ Eve by the Proprietress, on assuming charge of the establishment which was finely attended, and highly enjoyed by all present. THE FRIENDS OF MR. WIGGINS.—One of those touching little incidents which go so far toward rendering life tolerable came off a few days since in this place. We refer to the presentation of a pair of boots to Mr. Wiggins by his admirers and friends. The boots were procured from one of the parties to the presentation, by whom they were originally purchased for his own use, but proving a little tight across the toes, were furnished at a slightly reduced price for this interesting occasion. In order that the whole affair should pass off with the greatest possible eclat, Mr. Dumpy of Donkeyville, a modest city located upon the head waters of Little Deer Creek, was selected to make the presentation, which important part he performed in his usual happy manner. The whole party then adjourned to one of the open bars, and partook of a collation of boiled ham and whisky toddy. Toasts and speeches followed, which we regret the want of space in our columns to insert. Another of our acquaintances has a boot-jack which does not answer the purpose for which it was purchased and we look for a recurrence of this interesting ceremony. BILLIARD SALOON.—MESssRS. [VICTOR] BOLEY & [JOHN] BROULETTE entertained their friends last evening at their new Billiard saloon on Commercial Street preparatory to its opening, which will be in a few days? The rooms are well adapted to the purpose and the persons connected with the Saloon are gentlemanly and courteous. We bespeak for them a liberal patronage. BALL.—An anniversary Ball is to take place on the 8th inst. at the house of Messrs. Job & Johnson, Gold Hill. Extensive preparations have been made, a grand turn out and a pleasant time may be confidently expected. We know some of the getters up of the affair and better fellows are scarce. MARRIED. At Omega, on 27th ult., by G. W. Tallman, Esq., Mr. FRANKLIN W. HUDSON, to Miss ELIZA JANE SHORT, both of the former place. In this city on New Year’s evening, Mr. ALBERT MAU to Miss OTILLEGE [OTTILIE] BETHIN, all of this place. At Sebastopol, in this county, by Rev. L. S. Ely on the 22d December, Mr. L. W. CHASE and Miss MARTHA NELSON, all of Sebastopol.
