10 JANUARY 2 & 9, 1857 NEVADA JOURNAL ARREST.—An Indian called Charley was arrested near this place on Saturday last, on a charge of murder committed at Whisky Bar, Placer county, a few months since. it seems that Charley was arrested at the time of the alleged crime, but escaped from the hands of the officers, and has since been concealed in the vicinity of Nevada. When he was first recognized he shammed a broken back, but recovered in season to do some very good running before an officer could be brought to the spot. Constable Gregory, however, by means of a few judicious threats, succeeded in re-arresting him, and he is now lodged in the county jail. He will be sent to Auburn for examination. THE WEATHER.—Abundance of snow and rain has fallen during the last week in our vicinity. At this present writing the snow lies six feet deep at Eureka, and in many directions the roads are impassible. Notwithstanding two days rain, the hills about our town are still white with snow. The clouds give no sign as yet of letting up, and there is every prospect of a greater supply of this necessary element than we have had for years. Hugh F. McDermott offered his services to the Eureka Fire Co. No. 1 of Marysville to play for their benefit, which they declined accepting. RESIGNATION OF JUDGE HEYDENFELDT.—The Hon. S. Heydenfeldt has resigned his seat on the Supreme bench of California, having occupied it for many years—almost, in fact, since the infancy of our judicial system. That he has discharged the duties of his position well, few, who are competent judges in the matter will deny. .. CHANGE OF HOUR.—The service of the Episcopal church will be held next Sunday at the House of Dr. Overton at half-past two o’clock P.M. instead of eleven o’clock A.M., as usual. MONUMENTAL HOTEL.—The inauguration of this new hotel came off last evening in fine style. Grush kept open house, and treated his numerous friends in the most liberal manner. His new house is larger and more commodious than the old, and as he is a good fellow, we predict for him a large share of the public patronage. Notice to Taxpayers: The delinquent tax sale is postponed until Tuesday the 20th of Jan, 1857. Since the discontinuance of the Grass Valley Intelligencer, it has been rumored that another press will soon be brought to that place. FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 1857. Theatrical—E Clampsus Vitus. The Benefit of Frisbie and Bain, the enterprising owners of the Theatre, was attended by a full house on Monday evening last. These gentlemen have been assiduous and untiring in their efforts to please the public of Nevada, even at a considerable pecuniary loss to themselves, and the success of their benefit was fully deserved. On Tuesday evening, the Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampsus Vitus, gave a Complimentary Benefit to the Ladies of the Company. It was well deserved and eminently satisfactory. The Theatre was crowded from floor to ceiling. The Knights of the Order, in regalia, and proceeded by a band of music,
