NEVADA DEMOCRAT JULY 15, 1857 143
Ath of July, about three miles above this place, on Deer creek. The lode is about a foot thick, and has been
traced near a thousand feet in length. Some eight or ten ton of rock has been quarried out, which will be
taken to Grass Valley to be crushed. Scarcely a piece of rock can be picked up that does not show more or
less gold. The lode runs almost at right angles with Deer creek, and rises with the bluff on each side. Any
quantity of rock can be taken out at an expense of from one to two dollars a ton. Capt. Day has been
engaged in quartz for the past six years, and has heretofore been unsuccessful; but the lode which he has
recently discovered is one of the richest in the county.
HYDRAULIC DIVISION NO. 213 S. of T., located at North San Juan, installed the following
officers on the 7th inst: B. F. Couger, W.P.; D. Snow, W.A.; F. R. Vera, R.S.; Jas. Moore, T. After the
ceremonies, an address by Mr. Jacob Carter, the eloquent temperance lecturer, was listened to by the large
assemblage. The proceedings were public.
THE NEXT COUNTY CONVENTION.—A meeting of the Democratic Central Committee for this
county was held on Friday last, and a Convention called for August 15th, to nominate a candidate for
Senator, five Assemblymen, and three county Supervisors. The primary meetings, it will be seen, are to be
held on the 8th proximo; three weeks from next Saturday.
NEW POST OFFICE.—North San Juan in this county at length has proper postal facilities. A post
office has been located there, and John A. Seely formerly agent of Langton’s Express, has been appointed
Postmaster. This gives great satisfaction to the citizens of that place, who have greatly felt the
inconvenience of sending to neighboring towns for their mail matter.
POST OFFICE AT HUMBUG —A new post office has been established at Humbug, in this county,
called North Bloomfield, and Dr. Mark Emerson appointed Postmaster. At a meeting of the citizens some
months ago, a resolution was adopted, changing the name of the place to Bloomfield. Arrangements are
being made for carrying the mail which will be perfected in a few days.
QUARTZ MINERS’ MEETING—A meeting of quartz mines has been called to convene in Grass
Valley on Saturday next, the 18th inst., for the purpose of revising the quartz mining laws of Nevada
county. Mill owners and all persons interested in quartz mining are invited to attend and take part in the
proceedings of the meeting.
BRICK CHIMNEYS.—An ordinance was passed a week or more ago, by the Board of Trustees,
requiring brick chimneys to be built in wooden houses, where stoves are used. The ordinance will be
found on our fourth page.
CHANGE OF VENUE.—The case of Butler, indicted for murder in Sierra county, has been
transferred to Nevada, and will be tried at the next term of the District Court. The alledged [sic] murder
was committed some two years ago, and Butler escaped into Oregon. A reward was offered for his
apprehension by citizens of Sierra, and he was followed and arrested by an officer. On the way back, the
officer who had him in charge, fell overboard from the vessel and was drowned, and Butler was suspected
of having pushed him off the vessel, though of this, there is no proof. The case has been talked about so
much in Sierra county, that it was found impossible to get an impartial jury, hence its transfer to this
county.
