146 JULY 22 & 29, 1857 NEVADA DEMOCRAT COURTS.—The District Court, Court of Sessions and Board of Supervisors all meet on Monday the 3d day of August next. We understand that about sixty causes are at issue in the District Court, for the August term. The Court of Sessions will be full of business if the Grand Jury does its duty, and can get witnesses before it. The regular meeting of the Supervisors takes place on the day above named, and on the Monday following—according to law—they meet as a Board of Equalization. BRICK CHIMNEYS.—The ordinance requiring brick chimneys to be built to connect with stove pipes, in this city, takes effect on the second day of August next. Plenty of bricks can be procured to construct the chimneys, and there is no excuse whatever for not complying with the ordinance. CIRCUS.—The great North American Circus of Lee & Bennett gives an equestrian exhibition in Nevada, on Saturday evening, the 25th instant. This is now, we believe, the only circus company performing in the State, and the great number of talented artists connected with the establishment cannot fail to draw an immense crowd to witness their performances. WEDNESDAY, JULY 29, 1857] FIRE IN GRASS VALLEY.—The Winchester saw mill, at Grass Valley was consumed by fire on Friday afternoon. The fire was first seen issuing from the roof, and is supposed to have caught from the smoke stack. A few buckets of water timely applied would have saved the building, but there was no water convenient, and the mill with all its machinery, including a 60-horse power engine, together with about 100,000 feet of lumber, was destroyed. The mill was erected by Gen. Winchester in 1852, for crushing quartz, but was afterwards changed into a saw mill. It originally cost over a hundred thousand dollars. The mill was owned by Mr. Conaway, and was leased to Messrs. Bell & Jenny. Mr. Conaway’s loss is estimated at $15,000; that of the lessees at $8,000. The smoke was plainly visible in Nevada while the mill was burning. BACKED DOWN.—Mt. Stanley, the Republican candidate for Governor, failed to address the good people of Nevada, last Wednesday evening, according to announcement. FIRE.—A home belonging to Mr. McNutt, situated near the residence of Rev. O. B. Stone, took fire about half past one o’clock yesterday afternoon and was consumed. The house was occupied by Mr. George Rogers, who is the principal sufferer. Mrs. Rogers first discovered the fire in the roof, and the flames made such rapid progress that she merely had time to go in and was compelled to leave immediately, without being able to save any thing. The fire it is supposed took from the stove pipe. Had the house been situated in the thickly settled part of the town, the whole place would have been destroyed. The present is the season for fires in California towns, and our citizens cannot be too cautious in guarding against them. DRUG STORE.—Mr. E. F. Spence has purchased the stock and fixtures of the Drug Store on Commercial street, formerly owned by Dr. Rudolph. ... CIRCUS.—An immense crowd attended the performances of Lee & Bennett’s Circus on Saturday evening. The entertainment passed off in fine style.
