NEVADA JOURNAL JULY 17, 1857 153 INCENDIARY.—A diabolian was caught about three o’clock, Thursday morning in an alley leading from Commercial to Broad streets, attempting to fire a building occupied by David Ashmore. He was discovered by Pat Corbit and John O’Brien, policemen, and fired upon without effect. The scamp was taken in custody and marched to jail. Yesterday morning he was arraigned before Recorder Hupp, gave his name as Thomas Ford, a Scotchman, and after an examination was committed to jail to await his trial before the next Court of Sessions. Ford has been a resident of the place three years, and is reported to have been one of the very first men on the ground to attempt extinguishing the fire which Mayers [sic] was charged with kindling. On an examination of the premises, several matches were found to have been ignited which went out. The third attempt was more successful—setting fire to a quantity of light stuff that had been prepared for the purpose. The incipient conflagration was extinguished without danger. This is another warning we ought to heed. SUICIDE.—A Frenchman, named Celestin Rey, shot himself at the cabin of Mr. Fortune Guess, a countryman, near Bourbon Hill on Saturday morning last. Deceased came to the cabin begging for something to eat. Guess supplied his wants and went about his work leaving Rey in the cabin. While alone the unfortunate man took down a shot gun and discharged the contents through his breast. He was evidently insane, was a native of Aix in Provence and 30 years of age. FATAL AFFRAY AT FOREST CITY.—Anastasio Maldonado, a Mexican better known in this city where he has resided much of the time since 1850, by the name of “Muchacho” or [“Muchach,”] shot a man named Chapman Hough at Forest city, Sunday 12, so that he died from the effect of the night following [sic]. ... About 10 o’clock on Sunday morning Hough who went by the soubriquet [sic] of “Judge” met Muchach in the streets and was asked by the latter to play a game of cards. Hough replied in obscene and offensive terms. Muchach asked him what he said,—he repeated the expression, adding “‘you son of a b—h” and struck Muchach in the face with the flat of his hand, whereupon Muchach drew a pistol and fired the first shot in the ground. Hough followed Muchach who was backing across the street. Before he came up with him a second shot was discharged. Hough then caught Muchach and threw him down. At this time a third shot was fired when the parties were separated by outsiders. Hough was taken to the office of Dr. Lefever [sic] immediately. . . . DEATHS. In this city July 11th, Mr. Samuel Ayres, formerly of Loudon county, Virginia, aged 21 years. On the 8th inst., Clara Hughes, aged 1 year and 10 days. At Gold Hill, July 2d, Thomas Burrough, aged 29. At Gold Flat, July 8th, George R. Mitchell, aged 22 years, late of North Yarmouth, Maine. ANOTHER IMPROVEMENT.—The first brick building of the season is about to be erected on Washington street two doors above the Journal Building. Mr. Wm. Barton is having excavations made for the erection of a fire proof blacksmith shop, 32 feet front by 42 deep, at that place. It is to be so constructed as to be safe from fire without and fire within. Our city fathers need not be under sufficient apprehension in regard to blacksmith shops to drive by ordinance this one when completed out of the city. PUBLIC SPEAKING—We are requested to say that the Hon. Edward Stanley, Republican candidate for Governor, will address the people of Nevada on Wednesday the 22d inst. The high reputation of Mr. Stanley as an orator and gentleman will certainly command for him a respectful hearing.
