154 JULY 17 & 24, 1857 NEVADA JOURNAL REPUBLICAN CONVENTION.—The State convention of Republicans which assembled in Sacramento last week nominated the following ticket: Governor, Edward Stanley, of San Francisco; Lieut. Gov., D. W. Cheesman, of Butte; Controller, L. C. Gunn, of Tuolumne; Treasurer, Leland Stanford, of Sacramento; Attorney General, A. A. Sargent, of Nevada; Supreme Judge, Nat Bennett, of San Francisco; State Printer, F. B. Murdock, of San Jose. This ticket is one of the very best so far as the character and ability of the gentlemen composing it are concerned, that has ever been presented to the people of the State. AUBIN GAS WORKS.—We have received a pamphlet from the Aubin Patent Gas Company of San Francisco, setting forth the advantages of Aubin’s gas over coal gas, &c. When the people of Nevada are prepared for Gas Works we will examine the document and report. It is the intention of the company to extend their operations to this place soon. CABIN ROBBED.—The cabin of Geo. Mowbrey, on Miles’ Ravine was entered on Thursday night of last week, and robbed of money, clothing, &c. PETERSON CONVICTED.—Charley Peterson formerly in the employ of Adams & Co. in this place, has recently been tried and convicted of grand larceny at San Francisco. He kept an assay office and appropriated moneys left in his charge to his own use. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, but recommended him to the mercy of the court. The trial came off before Judge Coon. NATIONAL GYMNASIUM. Broad Street, Nevada. Next door to Hotel de Paris. M. CHAUVEL, PROFESSOR OF FENCING, has the honor to announce to the citizens of Nevada and the surrounding towns that he has opened his new gymnasium to which he has added a Broad and Small Sword Class! CIRCUS.—Lee & Bennett of the Great North American Circus, give one of their splendid and popular entertainments tomorrow evening. The style, quality and extent of these performances cannot be excelled in the line by any company in the State. There are five female performers in this Circus. The ground for exhibition will be in the rear of Harrington & Patterson’s on Pine street. [Republican candidate] Stanly did not address the citizens of Nevada on Wednesday night, according to appointment. A bell was dingled about town a short time before the hour arrived and a large crowd assembled doubtless expecting to hear the orator from the “Old North State.” In the midst of their expectancy a small boy mounted a barrel and informed the crowd that the speaker had not arrived.
