168 AUGUST 7 & 14, 1857 NEVADA JOURNAL
DISTRICT COURT met on Monday last, Judge Searls presiding. The calendar is large but contains
few cases of importance, being very much unlike the last. The trial of Butler for the murder of Moffit [sic]
at Downieville two years ago takes place on Monday next. The trial of Davis for murder committed at
Humbug City on one Mueller, will take place next week, as also Jones’ trial for manslaughter.
THE GRAND JURY—closed their labors on Wednesday. We learn that body were not satisfied with
the manner in which the county funds were managed by the late Treasurer, or with his books. It is said
that scrip issued last October had been paid in preference to that issued in May preceding. The Board of
Supervisors has ordered the scrip so redeemed to be paid by the sureties of the late Treasurer, and to take
its place in the order of registry. We understand the bondsmen will comply with the order without the
trouble and expense of compulsion.
MACHINIST.—A better machinist is hard to find than O. Crandall, Esq., whose card will be found
in its proper place. The machinery we have seen constructed under his superintendence moves like clock
work.
THE PENNSYLVANIANS played here last week to full houses and with increased popularity.

American Mass Meeting.
A goodly number of listeners assembled in front of the American Exchange on Wednesday night, to
hear the principles of the American party expounded by Major Bowie, Judge Ralston, and others. Judge
A. C. Niles was called to preside, who, after a few appropriate remarks, presented to the audience the
American candidate for Governor, Geo. W. Bowie. Though laboring under a severe cold and hoarseness,
caused by speaking in the open air, Major Bowie succeeded in impressing his hearers with his ability and
his powers as a public speaker. His speech, though pointed and strong in terms, was courteous, dignified
and impartial as a politician could well make it. There was no slang or vulgarity about it, like what
